Major 20th century design collections grace Rago auctions Sept. 22-24

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. – Rago Arts and Auction Center will hold important auctions devoted to early 20th century and modern design Sept. 22-24. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Rago’s will present the Lexora Collection of Lalique Glass on Friday beginning at noon Eastern time. This spectacular single-owner East Coast collection of Rene Lalique has a multitude of rare forms and colors, including an Alexandrite Tortues (below), blue-violet Martin-Pêcheurs, red Escargot, pale blue Pigeons, opalescent Oran and Bacchantes, and mauve Courges.

“This is by far the best collection we have seen in the last 10 years and is a testament to the owners’ passion for Lalique,” said David Rago, partner and co-director of the 20th-21st Century Design Department.

The Danziger Collection of early 20th century design will cross the auction block Saturday starting at 9 a.m. Richard and Peggy Danziger assembled this collection for their Armonk, N.Y., home in the early heyday of Arts and Crafts. Many of the works featured in this session are seldom-seen examples by the best craftspeople of their age.

“This is a collection filled with gems from Rohlfs, Stickley, Van Erp, and Tiffany; it shines throughout with exceptionally designed and crafted furnishings we are privileged to bring to market,” said Rago specialist Jerry Cohen.

The Hudson Years: The Collection of Mark McDonald will sell on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.

“Ever since Mark opened the legendary Fifty/50 in 1983, he has been one of the world’s leading experts on American and European design from the 1920s to the present. Many of the leading museum collections of design, from Vitra to the Met to LACMA, bear the imprint of Mark’s 35-year history as a dealer. This auction is a curated sale of the remaining contents of his Hudson gallery space, together with a few key pieces from his personal collection,” said James Zemaitis, guest editor.
