COEUR d’ ALENE, Idaho – Western art lovers looking for a fast-paced, high-energy auction should bid in the March in Montana Auction on March 20 and 21. The 33rd March in Montana sale promises to be one of the best. Offered are some of the finest historic works to come out of Montana in years. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
Collectors will have an opportunity to pick up some great works by Assiniboine (Native American) artist William Standing. The works have been in the same family for over 50 years. The highlight is a buffalo hunt scene (below), painted in 1925, that hung in a bar in Eastern Montana for many years.
The auctioneers are also excited to have several great pieces from “Charlie’s Friends” including Joe De Yong, Philip Goodwin, and Edgar Paxson. This is the most desirable group of De Yong pieces that have been put together in a long time. The Goodwin is dated 1904 and was an illustration he did for Outing magazine.
Collectors are always on the lookout for artworks by Edgar Paxson. His work should be in every collection of Western art. One of the pieces in the auction is a large commission piece of the copper baron Marcus Daly’s ranch in Hamilton, Montana.
Western Art Week has been a favorite of art lovers for years. Certain artists are crowd favorites and none is more popular than Andy Thomas, Charles Fritz and Randy Van Beek. For the 2020 sale the auctioneers are looking forward to the offerings from these admired artists.
The thing that sets March in Montana apart is the unique items offered, such as a first edition of the Russell book titled Good Medicine that has a wonderful drawing on the inside cover by Edward Borein. For collectors of Native American items there is a rare pictograph by Arrow Top Knot. A fine example of a Thomas Molesworth club chair set with end tables is also featured. A great collection of beadwork, weavings, cowboy items, and antique firearms make the sale a can’t miss event in March.
The March in Montana auction will be held in Great Falls, Montana, in conjunction with the March in Montana Dealer Show, which will run March 19-21 during Western Art Week. Free and open to the public, these events are presented by Coeur d’ Alene Galleries and the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction. The auction will begin at 11 a.m. Mountain time on both Saturday and Sunday.
