PHILADELPHIA – Material Culture is heralding in the New Year with its first Annex Auction of general estate items, including art, antiques, decorative arts and furnishings. Annex Auctions feature low starting bids, and, just as importantly, no reserves on any of the items. The sale begins at 8 a.m. EST, Saturday, Jan. 12. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding.
These auctions, held online only, are the perfect place for anyone seeking a deal. All of the items up for auction are affordably valued, and likely to sell at prices that are the very definition of a bargain. The full auction catalog is available at liveauctioneers.com, which offers bidding both before and during the auction.
The auction opens with over 60 lots of carpets and rugs, from antique to modernist, originating in Persia, Turkey, India, China and elsewhere. Bidding on some of the carpets starts as low as $10, though most begin bidding at $20-$100. Textiles at the auction include a collection of vintage West African cloths, a Chinese silk Kaftan, and three lots of assorted vintage and antique sari fragments.
Decorative, folk and ethnographic art from around the world represent a strong portion of the auction. Hand-painted tin street signs from Pakistan comprise approximately 10 lots. Arts from Indonesia include carved effigies, carved “wedding procession” horses, teak chairs and tables, and gong stands with gongs. A selection of carvings, figures, chests, footstools, baskets, and other objects from Africa and Asia round out this category.
Approximately 45 lots at the auction showcase art, both pictorial framed pieces, and sculpture. A large collection of affordable prints, etchings and engravings will be shown, along with serigraphs by Erte, Thomas McKnight and a Roy Lichtenstein neon light box. Original painting includes two mixed-media pieces by Dorris Staffel, a collection of modern Chinese oil paintings purchased from the artist in Beijing, and paintings by Bessie Hoffman and Adrien Avril. Bidding starts as low as $10 for these pieces, the majority accessibly valued at under $200. Similar price ranges can be seen in sculpture, with both abstract modernist pieces in wood, and animal figures in stone, wood, concrete and ceramics.
Furnishings comprise the rest of the auction, with antique, vintage and contemporary offerings. Ladderback, Windsor and armchairs, and coffee and side tables are shown in the most varieties, but the auction also includes bed frames, dressers, cabinets and lamps. Most of the furniture is American or European, though several lots are Asian, predominantly Chinese.
All of the lots, with extensive photographs, can be seen on LiveAuctioneers.com, which also offers live bidding on the day of the auction.
