JERUSALEM – Matsart Auctioneers & Appraisers will conduct a Judaic fine art auction on Sunday, April 22. The sale will consist of 174 lots of Judaic fine art and religious objects, with the categories including Israeli fine art, 19th and 20th-century European Judaic fine art, and contemporary Judaica. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Jewish weddings are a popular theme in the auction. Wedding with Rabbi Moshe Feinstein (above), a circa-1985 oil on canvas by Huvy (Ahuva) Elisha (Israeli, b. 1927-) is one of the top lots in the sale. According to the Huvy’s Gallery website, the artist views it as her sacred mission to recreate the fervor and holiness of prewar European Jewry. This has been most vividly captured in her famous wedding scenes.

Emmanuel Mané Katz (Ukrainian, French,1894-1962) was best known for his depictions of shtetlekh, which were small towns with large Jewish populations that existed in Central and Eastern Europe before the Holocaust. His oil-on-canvas painting titled Rabbi with Torah Scroll (below) has been authenticated by artist Lucien Krief, owner and CEO of Matsart Auctioneers & Appraisers.

Another painting having a religious theme is Abraham and the Three Angels by Arthur Kolnik (Lithuanian, 1890-1972). Based on Genesis Chapter 18, the oil on panel measures 25 by 35 inches and has a $15,000-$18,000 estimate.

Many views of Jerusalem, especially the Old City, are available in the sale. One of the largest such works is an oil on canvas by Israeli artist Alex Levin. It measures 47 by 55 inches (est. $8,000-$10,000).

Yaacov Agam (Israeli, b. 1928) is a sculptor and experimental artist known for his optical and kinetic art. A “superkinetic” work titled Magen David measures 19 inches square and has a $9,000-$11,00 estimate.
