Metropolitan Museum of Art items headline Clars auction March 18-19

OAKLAND, Calif. – On Sunday, March 19, Clars Auction Gallery will present the second installment from the collection of decorative arts and furnishings deaccessioned from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

The first offering of property from the Met was featured in Clars February 2017 sale, realizing over $280,000, with bidding on many items surpassing estimates. The second installment of Met property to be featured in March is expected to continue this upward trend and is anticipated to be a very exciting sale, with a wide array of furniture and decorative arts from the collection to be presented.

There will be several highlights of note coming to this sale including English furniture and decorative art stretching across a wide range of periods. Several tripod tables will be featured in the auction including an English mahogany tripod table (above), circa 1800, valued at $5,000-$7,000,  and another George III mahogany tripod table, circa 1800, valued at $4,000-$6,000.

In addition, a collection of decorative art and porcelains will open the Sunday sale. A large collection of English blue transfer ware is expected to be of great interest (below). With over 100 pieces presented, prices of the groupings will range up to $1,000-$1,500.

A fine selection of English samplers, dating from as early as the 18th century, will be offered. The collection includes a silk on wool needlework, dated 1790, that is adorned with a scenic illustration of a house beside a man harvesting fruit from a tree, and a woman with sheep and a dog.

Anticipated to draw international bidding will be an ink and color on paper titled Splashed Color Autumn Landscape (below) by Zhang Daqian (Chinese 1899-1983). This work is estimated to achieve $30,000- $50,000.

Important works by Russian artists will highlight the fine art offerings in the March sale. Topping the list will be an oil on canvas by Ivan Fedorovich Choultse (Russian, 1877-1932), Untitled (Sunset Snow Scene), which is expected to earn $20,000-$40,000.

The spectacular designs of the Victorian and Edwardian period will highlight the jewelry offerings. An elegant Victorian 18K gold micromosaic necklace, circa 1850, will be offered for $5,000-$7,000.

Clars’ March 2017 Fine Art, Decorative Art, Furniture, Jewelry/Timepieces and Asian Art Auction will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 18 and 19. The sales will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
