ALAMEDA, Calif. – Michaan’s will offer Banksy’s Girl with Balloon in its winter auction slated for Friday, December 17. The final month of 2021 will actually bring two exciting auction events to Michaan’s, with the bonus of their monthly Gallery Auction taking place on December 18. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available for both events through LiveAuctioneers.

Girl With Balloon is the image immortalized in Banksy’s sensational self-shredding work, Love Is In The Bin, which Sotheby’s sold in October for $25.4 million, a record for the artist. The sale price, 18 times what the work sold for in 2018, was a leading news story in the art world this year. Michaan’s estimates its Girl With Balloon at $100,000-$150,000. The piece was purchased by the current owner in the early 2000s at a flash sale Banksy put on in a London warehouse.

The great American landscape painter Albert Bierstadt is also featured at Michaan’s in December. The Hudson is a quintessential Bierstadt subject of a figure walking through a rainbow-illuminated landscape. It is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

The auction lineup features jewelry from the estate of Lois Lehrman, herself an incomparable gem among San Francisco’s grande dames of society and local business leadership. Chief among them is a diamond and platinum ring centering a Vs 1, “I” stone of more than four carats. It is estimated at $30,000-$50,000. Other jewelry lots of note include a Tiffany & Co. Art Deco emerald and diamond ring, estimated at $4,000-$6,000. It centers one sugarloaf cabochon emerald flanked by faceted diamonds.

Also certain to spark fierce bidding are a pair of hundred-year-old garments from Coco Chanel’s atelier that have remained in the family of the original owner until this auction. Sold in separate lots, these incredible finds are in good condition and feature beautiful details on Chanel’s signature sleek silhouettes. The fur-trimmed coat, embroidered throughout with geometric designs characteristic of the early 1920s, is estimated at $20,000-$30,000. The ethereal black silk embroidered robe incorporates silk jersey, an example of Chanel’s fabric innovation. It also features an overlay of pastel-embroidered black silk chiffon, and carries an estimate of $8,000-$12,000.

Collectors of Asian art have much to discover at Michaan’s in December. A bronze seated figure of Buddha, possibly dating to the Ming dynasty, is estimated at $6,000-$8,000. A lime green ground famille rose porcelain ribbon vase, estimated at $3,000-$5,000, is just one of many fine Chinese porcelains on offer.
