Michaan’s offers quality selection in June 16 & 19 auctions

ALAMEDA, Calif. – This month, Michaan’s will conduct a Gallery Auction on Friday, June 16, and a Modern Auction on Monday, June 19 that will feature the work of sought-after artists and designers such as Motherwell, Mapplethorpe, Eames, and Nakashima. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Michaan’s June 16 Gallery Auction will feature a group of Cambodian silver hollowware articles; a Louis XVI-style Boulle bureau mazarin; and an ethnographic section that has a Ifugao Bulul mounted human trophy skull. The Fine Arts choices boast a strong showing of American artists including Tomi D. Kobara, Raphael Lillywhite, Irwin Luckman and Maurice Braun.

The June 16 lineup also features material from the late artist Ira Yeager’s homes and studio. His unique and eclectic collection includes pieces of furniture that are adorned with paintings that bear his signature. One is a French-style side table or end table with a tea pot painted on top by Yeager and signed. Its estimate is $500-$700. Also on offer is a pedestal table that Yeager painted with a portrait of George Washington and signed.

Michaan’s will also showcase pocket watches in the jewelry section. This grouping features a C.H. Meylon & Co. diamond and 14K gold pocket watch with a 9K gold watch chain sporting a bloodstone watch fob, estimated at $1,500-$2,500. Also being offered in the jewelry section is a stunning Art Deco diamond, enamel and white gold locket brooch; a Mikimoto cultured pearl necklace; and a diamond ring with a stone that weighs more than 2.5 carats. The ring has an estimate of $5,000-$7,000.

The furniture and decorative arts section of the Monday, June 19 Modern Auction features chairs by Hans Wegner, daybeds by Bruno/Karl Mathson and Torben and Hanne Valeur, and a George Nakashima for Widdicomb Origins tall dresser that has an estimate of $2,500-$3,500. The Fine Art choices are led by a sculpture by Chaim Gross, Horse with Three Acrobatic Riders, which is estimated at $1,000-$2,000. Rounding out the sale is studio pottery from Otto Heino, Russell Wright and Van Poriggle.
