Lot 106. Samia Halaby (Palestinian, b. 1937) '#270 (Rainbow Spirals),' 1972/3. Gray's Auctioneers image

Modern and contemporary prints, paintings at Gray’s, Jan. 28

CLEVELAND – Selections from the Stanley Yulish collection of contemporary and modern prints and paintings are up for auction at Gray’s in Cleveland on Jan. 28, with online live bidding provided by LiveAuctioneers.com.

The auction includes pieces from established artists including Dali, Picasso, Henry Moore, Georges Rouault and Max Ernst together with works from pop to op including Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Victor Vasarely, Yaacov Agam, Richard Anuskiewicz and George Snyder.

Highlights of the auction include Lot 1, a free spirited lithograph from 1930, Bather by Raoul Dufy. It is signed and number 20/40 in pencil. A sensuous example of his colorful and optimistic open-air scenes, this lithograph depicts a beach bathing beauty turning away toward an ocean busy with boats bobbing and waves undulating shoreward. Lot 20 is Marc Chagall’s The Blue Clown, a playful color lithograph,

signed and numbered 27/50 in the lower margin in pencil and completed in 1984.

Samia Halaby’s magnificent geometric abstraction #270 (Rainbow Spirals), an oil on canvas, was completed in February 1973 and anchors the sale at Lot 106. An optical illusion of colorful stripes depicting spirals, the painting confounds and amuses the viewer. The Palestinian-born artist and scholar who lives and works in New York, completed this painting during her tenure as the first female associate professor at Yale School of Art. Her work is collected by private collectors and public institutions around the world.

Kristopher Benedict’s untitled canvas at lot 110A is an oil on canvas from 2006 employing a figurative motif and a fauvist use of color accumulating layers of visual information. At first glance the use of color is visually arresting but on closer inspection the more quotidian subjects of the painting emerge engaging the viewer with a striking visual narrative. Benedict’s work is in several collections and he shows at the Sue Scott Gallery in New York.

Chilean artist Gustavo Novoa constructs a dream-like canvas at lot 121. The gently radiant colors of Novoa’s luxuriant foliage seem to wield a mystical power, bringing together lions, a panther and a unicorn staring intensely across the water at an anthropomorphized panther who leans back nonchalantly on one arm as if poised to sip a cocktail. The reflection of the animals in the water enhance the distance between the viewer and the viewed. Novoa’s new work has debuted at the Wally Findlay Galleries in New York since the early 1970s and is in collections and institutions across the globe.
