Moon and stars will shine at Wittlin & Serfer auction, July 19
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Cultural icons of the 20th century will be in the spotlight again at Wittlin & Serfer Auctioneers’ Summer Fine Art Auction on July 19. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding.
Andy Warhol’s rendition of Judy Garland in Blackglama, a 1985 screen print on Lenox Museum Board reprises the entertainer’s advertisement for American Legend Mink. The 38-inch-square print carries a $35,000-$45,000 estimate.
Marilyn Monroe dressed and made to look like Jacqueline Kennedy is theme of an oversized Chromogenic print photographed by Bert Stern in 1962 and printed in 2000.
“It’s from what’s called ‘The Lost Sitting,’ which was found about 15 years ago. The prints are rare,” said Gary Santoro of Wittlin & Serfer Auctioneers. “It’s interesting to see Marilyn Monroe mimicking Jackie.”
Two poses of Marilyn are on 33- by 34 1/2-inch paper, which is signed in white by the photographer. The lot is expected to bring $5,000-$7,000.
An op art American Flag by Roy Lichtenstein titled La Nouvelle Chute de L’ Amerique is estimated at $20,000-$25,000. The 1992 etching aquatint measures 18 7/8 by 13 7/8 inches.
On the 40 anniversary of man’s first walk on the moon comes a Robert Rauschenberg lithograph titled Marsh from the Stoned Moon Series. The 35 1/2- by 25-inch print depicts a rocket on the launching pad and the state seal of Florida. From an edition of 60, the print is estimated at $12,000-$15,000.
“It’s an early Rauschenberg from one of his most important series,” said Santoro.
White Hat is one of four silk screens by Alex Katz in the auction. Done in 1990, this 36- by 25 1/2-inch print pictures a young person wearing a white fedora. It has a $4,000-$5,000 estimate.
“It’s just a great Katz image,” said Santoro.
