MONROVIA, Calif. – Moran’s will begin the 2019 auction season with its first Studio Fine Art auction on Sunday, Jan. 13. Together with Studio Furniture & Decorative Art, this sale will be the first to be held on a Sunday for Moran’s. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
Women artists feature prominently in the Studio Fine Art auction. A skillfully done work from Nell Walker Warner Wash Day at Griffiths captures white linen swaying in the breeze before a weathered barn set into a grove of trees. The work (above) is anticipated to bring $1,000-$2,000 at auction.
The illustration makes an exciting addition to the auction. A sweet watercolor of beloved children’s book character Madeline and her dog Genevieve from illustrator Ludwig Bemelmans dates to 1954 and is expected to charm audiences when it comes to the block with a $3,000-$5,000 estimate (below).
One of Moran’s most popular offerings are landscapes from California and American artists. Alfred R. Mitchell’s work of boats docked in a harbor capture the delicate rock of the waves as it bobs the vessels. In the Harbor is estimated to sell between $2,000-$3,000.
A work from Paul Lauritz of a eucalyptus landscape with a barn sets the quintessentially California scene under a bright blue sky broken up by streaks of white clouds. The landscape is projected to sell between $2500-$3,500.
European artists are also well represented in the auction. City Park, an oil on board by Hugo Scheiber, shows a rush of parkgoers under a canopy of green trees. The wistful work is estimated at $800-$1,200. A colorful lithograph from Joan Miro, Abstract with a star, shows the artist’s imitable abstractions with splatters of color and is estimated to sell between $800-$1,200.
Moran’s will kick off the day of auctions with its Studio Furniture & Decorative Art auction on Sunday at 10 a.m. Pacific time.
A strong selection of mid-century modern design is peppered throughout the auction. An Eero Saarinen “Tulip” table designed for Knoll is constructed with an unusual wood top over an early white powder-coated metal base. The iconic table is expected to sell within its $1,000-$1,500 estimate.
Works of art from Asia are among the most popular items at the Studio Furniture & Decorative Art auctions. A beautifully carved figural group of Rama bestowing his ring to Hanoman to bring to Rama’s love Sita comes to the block with a conservative $300-$400 estimate.
European and American silver is well represented in the auction as well. A 1935 English silver inkwell from Garrard & Co. Ltd. created for the Jubilee of King George V is likely to sell for a princely sum between $400-$600 at auction. An exquisite pair of figural nut dishes in the form of peacocks from Gorham would be a proud addition to any table. The peacocks are expected to sell between $300-$500.
A pair of Baccarat Amberina candlestick lusters in the rare pink color should expect to bring $300-$500 at auction.
Collectors of European furniture design need look no further than the selection in this auction. A pair of contemporary carved French Provencial-style armchairs designed with comfortable oversized dimensions would make a welcome accent to any living room at $500-700. For a more contemporary twist on classic European design, a Ralph Lauren Georgian-style armchair with black faux crocodile leather and carved ebonized wood is a study in monochromatic design. The chair estimated at $600-$900.
