AMESBURY, Mass. – John McInnis Auctioneers will begin its Fall Auction schedule with an Important October Estates sale on Sunday, Oct. 19, commencing at 11 a.m. EST. The auction will feature Americana, silver, porcelain, sculpture, pottery, fine art and historical memorabilia.

The sale opens with a rare and important discovery from the descendants of Nicholas Pike, an author on mathematics from Newburyport, Mass. The lot includes the first 1786 edition Pikes Arithmetic, a new and complete system of arithmetic (Nicholas Pike’s copy with hand written notes), and a three-page letter from George Washington dated 1788 written to the author commending him on his accomplishments and the importance of the work.

Significant highlights of the sale will include a large collection of silver from a Massachusetts collector, including a tea service by Martele Gorham, an American Victorian silver ladle by Tiffany, and a selection of Georgian silver.

There will be several works of art offered including a wonderful discovery from descendents of a Massachusetts family: an oil and mixed media on board by contemporary Korean artist Park Sookeun, dated 1956, retaining original paper labels. Also included: one of 3 pencil drawings by Lillian Westcott Hale, titled Zeffie, the earliest known portrait painting of Harriet Beecher Stowe passed down in the family of Reverend Edward Everett Hale, and works by other noted artists.

Furnishings include a country Sheraton grain-painted four-poster bed, a Portsmouth Federal drop panel chest from the Pitman family, Portsmouth, N.H., a Hepplewhite period two-part secretary desk with birch veneer drawer fronts.

A collection of American pottery, including Weller, Rookwood and Dedham are entered in the sale, along with a collection of American cut glass.
