New Hampshire Antique Dealers’ Americana auction slated for June 15
NEW YORK – A circa-1850-1860 antique album quilt, an 1824 needlework sampler by a 10-year-old New Hampshire girl, and an eagle applique quilt with an 1867 date will compete for top-lot status at Jasper52’s next New Hampshire Antiques Dealers: Americana auction, which will be held on Thursday, June 15, starting at 6 pm Eastern time. As always, the sale is curated by Clifford Wallach, an expert in tramp art, folk art and Americana. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The 458-lot sale boasts the requisite bounty of antique treasures, such as a Limoges punch bowl; an 1820s Pennsylvania redware storage jar; a circa-1840 mocha jug painted with an earthworm motif; a multi-tiered, two-drawer tramp art box; a mid-19th-century wooden horse pull toy; an early 1920s American flag with 13 stars arranged in a circle in the canton; and a late 18th- or early 19th-century cast iron and brass balance scale.
Other lots of interest include a metal globe dating to 1930; a circa-1950 sign from Vermont touting ‘PIGLETS ready now,’ a vintage Marvel Comics Super Heroes lunch box with Thermos that depicts Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor and the Fantastic Four; a group of 10 Mack Sennett bathing beauty postcards from the early 20th century; a majolica tobacco jar in the form of a jester’s head; a 1950s cast metal dachshund paperweight with a green patina; and a vintage set of brass mallard duck head bookends.

1824 needlework sampler by 10-year-old Elizabeth Maria Robinson of Surry, N.H., estimated at $1,500-$2,000
Textiles dominate the highlights as well as the auction itself. A particular standout is an 1824 silk-on-linen needlework sampler by 10-year-old Elizabeth Maria Robinson of Surry, N.H., estimated at $1,500-$2,000. The young girl inscribed the sampler with her name, her town and state, the date of completion, and an all-caps verse that reads: ‘WHAT IS FEMALE BEAUTY BUT AN AIR DIVINE/ THROUGH WHICH THE MIND ALL GENTLE GRACES SHINE/ BEAUTY ATTRACTS THE EYES BUT VIRTUE CHARMS THE HEART.’
Quilt highlights include an eagle applique quilt with an 1867 date, estimated at $1,500-$2,500; and a circa-1850-1860 antique album quilt that carries an estimate of $2,500-$3,000. The latter was found in New England, sports 42 different appliqued blocks, and is described as being in “excellent, lightly used condition.”
