New Orleans Auction to offer contents of famous shop April 4-5

NEW ORLEANS – The contents of Adriaans Antiques will be offered at New Orleans Auction Galleries’ Major Estates sale April 4-5. For more than 40 years the prestigious shop in the French Quarter enjoyed an international reputation for Chinese porcelains and works of art.

The shop’s inventory was distinguished by exotic wares from China’s most illustrious periods of production: the Tang, Song, Ming and Qing dynasties. The collection is particularly strong in Chinese Export porcelain. Foremost in that category is a myriad of blue and white porcelain from the Ming through the Qing dynasties, and includes chargers, bowls and ceremonial pieces.

The collection includes Chinese bronzes, Tang Dynasty tomb figures, a diverse group of armorial pieces with motifs of Chinese mythology and European heraldry, and furniture.

Capt. Johan W. Adriaans, a pilot for the Royal Netherlands Naval Academy, served in the Dutch East Indies during the 1930s. There he developed an appreciation for Asian art. As a flight instructor for the Dutch Flying School during World War II, Adriaans was stationed at Hawkins Field in Jackson, Miss. He returned to his native Holland after the war to work for the Royal Dutch Airlines, KLM.

Adriaans’ love of Asian Art and the South prompted him to immigrate to the United States in 1950. He operated an antique shop on North State Street in Jackson, Miss., for about 10 years. Adriaans moved the business to the New Orleans French Quarter in 1961. His first shop was located on Royal Street, but eventually Adriaans Antiques established its niche on historic Conti Street.

Adriaans died in New Orleans on April 29, 1997. The shop continued under the administration of his longtime companion, Carl McPherson.

New Orleans Auction Galleries’ Major Estates sale will also include antiques and art from the estate of A.G. Gueymard of Houston, an extensive group of Palissy and majolica from a French collector and property from numerous Southern estates and Private Collections.
