NHADA Americana selection showcased in Nov. 11 auction
NEW YORK – On Thursday, November 11, starting at 6 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will conduct an auction titled New Hampshire Antiques Dealers: Americana. Choices include an early 18th-century Huguenot brass wine cooler; a circa-1850s red and green coxcomb quilt; a circa-1770 mahogany Rhode Island side chair with open work splat and stop fluted legs; a late 17th-century London delft octagonal plate depicting William and Mary; a pair of horse head cast iron finials; and an 1828 needlework sampler from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The 292 lots in the sale are, as always, curated by Clifford Wallach, an expert on tramp art, folk art, and Americana. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Jasper52’s NHADA sales almost always include antique needlework samplers, and this sale is no exception. Featured this time is the work of Sarah Whidden, a 14-year-old from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, who completed the silk-on-linen sampler in 1828. It is inscribed: “Wrought by Sarah L Whidden aged 14 yrs under the Tuition of Miss / Odiorne AD 1828, and, In Memory of Granma / Mary Whidden who died April 9th 1828. Aged 80 years 3 months / Long shall pity mourn thy sudden doom / And breathe fond sighs around thy silent tomb / Oft shall my footsteps to thy grave repart / And my fond thoughts shall often wander there … ” The sampler carries an estimate of $8,000-$10,000.
Also of note is a circa-1690 London delft octagonal plate depicting the English royal couple William and Mary. It measures eight and one-quarter inches in diameter and has a few condition issues, namely some hairlines as well as a rim chip, but it has otherwise survived the centuries in decent shape. Like the sampler, the London delft plate is estimated at $8,000-$10,000.
The final highlight is a circa-1850s red, green and white coxcomb cotton quilt, estimated at $1,500-$1,800. The hand-appliqued, hand-quilted textile boasts an unusual border with trees, hearts, diamonds and moons. It measures 70 by 86 inches and the lot notes state it is in “excellent condition, with a couple of small, faint spots and no wear.”
