NEW YORK – On Thursday, Nov. 12, Jasper52 will present an exciting auction of Americana that features items exclusively from the prestigious New Hampshire Antique Dealers Association. Everything that could be found in a country store a century ago – from weathervanes to the fabric used to stitch a quilt – can be found in the sale’s nearly 400 lots. Images of American Indians figured prominently in advertising commercial products in the 19th and 20th centuries. One such example is a cardboard sign produced for the Ohio Salt Co. of Wadsworth, Ohio, which dates to about 1930. The 5-foot-long framed sign (above) depicting a Chippewa chief is expected to sell for $1,200-$1,400.

Figural trade signs customarily were hung outside a business to attract potential customers. One such sign from Maine depicts a large salmon molded of tin. Painted on the side of the 43-inch-long fish in capital letters is the word “BAIT” (est. $1,200-$1,500).

A 5-foot-long weathervane offered in the Jasper52 auction is in the form of a quill, which doubled as a trade sign symbol often used by scriveners. Found in Lancaster, Pa., the early 1900s vane is made of copper and its round bar is strengthened with zinc (est. $3,000-$3,500).

No less than 30 quilts are available in the auction, headed by a dazzling variation of the Starburst pattern. Hand-stitched in the 1870s, this 78-inch-square quilt remains in excellent condition. Its rich deep teal background is accented with narrow strips of yellow in random directions on the diagonal to further the dynamic appearance of the quilt (est. $1,500-$2,000).

Folk art offered in the sale includes a life-size canvasback drake duck that was carved in wood by Frank Finney of Cape Charles, Va. The fowl features realistically detailed feather carving with raised wingtips and exceptionally fine painted surfaces (est. $1,200-$1,400).

The Jasper52 auction of Americana picked by members of the New Hampshire Antique Dealers Association will be conducted Thursday, Nov. 12, starting at 6 p.m. EST.
