Nye & Co. showcases Vasarely, Braque and Miro, April 21-22

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Nye & Company Auctioneers will hold a two-day online Chic and Antique Estate Treasures auction on April 21 and 22. It features a large selection of modern furniture, rugs, and lighting consigned from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island, while simultaneously bringing a strong selection of prints, paintings, and other works by blue chip artists. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Sessions on both days will open at 10 am Eastern time. The sale, which will feature more than 600 lots, will include part two of the collection of Cornelia and Simon Michael Bessie of Lyme, Conn., offering works by artists such as Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Claude Joseph Vernet, Jacques Philippe De Loutherbourg, Jean-Louise-Andre-Theodore Gericault, and Dominico Valeriani.

Also headlining the sale are selections from the Steve and Stephanie Alpert collection, which contains several examples of Leonard Baskin’s lithographic portraits of Native American Indian Chiefs. Frank Stella’s abstract circular wool wall tapestry, Sinjerli Variations II, estimated at $7,000-$10,000, and a similarly abstract Victor Vasarely aluminum sculpture, Kroa, estimated at $8,000-$12,000, are just two examples of visually exciting artworks up for bid.

Other notable consignments include an ink drawing by Georges Braque, estimated at $10,000-$15,000 and titled Diana the Huntress, and Kees Van Dongen’s watercolor of a man, estimated at $10,000-$20,000. The sale also features a collection of prints and multiples that includes a Mixografia print on handmade paper by Helen Frankenthaler, estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

Also in the prints and multiples category is a pochoir in colors by Joan Miro from 1936 titled Femme et Chien devant la Lune and estimated at $15,000-$25,000. It was a gift from Henri Matisse’s daughter-in-law to the late United States Senator from Rhode Island, Claiborne Pell, and his wife, Nuala. Another estate will contribute a maritime scene by Emile Gruppe, estimated at $5,000-$7,000, and a winter view of Washington Square Park by Guy Wiggins, estimated at $10,000-$20,000.

Also of note is a portrait of a gentleman by Jozef Israels, which is estimated at $10,000-$15,000. The darker, somber tones of this work and the piercing eyes of the sitter draw the viewer into his soul, creating a dynamic portrait experience.

Several Black Forest-style carved violins of German origin feature in the sale as well. The tops of their necks are carved with lions and a variety of other animals and faces, transforming them from merely an instrument to a fanciful work of folk art.

Completing the sale lineup is a group of 18th- and 19th-century lighting devices fashioned in a variety of materials such as glass, tole, wood, and iron. A standout is the folding book form traveling light, which is guaranteed to brighten any traditional Americana collection.
