ASHBURN, Va. – Life may still be moving slowly during the pandemic, but business has never been busier at Oakridge Auction Gallery in preparation for their annual Spring Fine Asian Art & Antiques Auction. Scheduled for March 13-14, this auction will feature over 500 lots separated into two sessions: Ceramics & Works Of Art beginning at 10 a.m. EST on March 13, and Chinese Paintings & Calligraphy beginning at 10 a.m. on March 14. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.

Boasting over 300 lots, the Ceramics & Works Of Art session is packed with incredible lots of Chinese and Southeast Asian art dating from the Warring States period through to modern times. From impeccable jade carvings and imperial Chinese porcelains to rare Huanghuali furniture and evocative contemporary art, this session will pique the interests of new and seasoned collectors alike.

The highlight of the session is Lot 288, an exquisite gilt bronze Medicine Buddha (above) dating from the Yongle or Xuande periods of the Ming dynasty. Also known as Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha is believed to alleviate the physical and mental illnesses of his patients through their recitation of his mantra. While the Medicine Buddha is a rather common subject of sculpture, this particular depiction is rare: Medicine Buddha is usually depicted in the modest garb typical of most Buddhas, but this sculpture is lavishly adorned with jewelry and a crown. Few like it exist, and fewer find their way to the market. Its presale estimate is $50,000-$80,000.

Other lots in this session include a peachbloom ‘Beehive’ water pot (below) dating to the Kangxi period from a private collection in Virginia (Lot 213); an unusually large Ming Dynasty gilt bronze statue of Guanyin from the collection of Dr. Lobelson in San Diego, California (Lot 282); and an Imperial red-glazed vase with the mark of the emperor Yongzheng and of the period from the collection of writer Cao Maoji (Lot 228). The peachbloom water pot has an estimate of $25,000- $35,000, and the latter two lots have estimates of $15,000-$25,000 each.

Session 2: With nearly 200 lots, the Chinese Paintings & Calligraphy session features a number of pieces coming from collections that have traveled the world. The highlight is Lot 481, a masterful landscape painting by the legendary Zhang Daqian from the collection of the late Hing Tong, a renowned mathematician. Other important lots include a painting of chicks by Xu Gu estimated at $15,000-$25,000 from the Becker family collection in northern Virginia (Lot 421), and several paintings by Pu Ru from various collections around the country (Lots 452, 499, 538).
