Old World finery to shine at Dallas Auction Gallery sale Oct. 20

DALLAS – Antique and fine art collectors have the opportunity to bid on rare Minton majolica, Newcomb College pottery, KPM porcelain plaques, Buccellati silver, French and American furniture and many other unusual finds in Dallas Auction Gallery’s auction Wednesday, Oct. 20. Bidding is available worldwide through phone bidding, absentee bidding and live on the Internet through LiveAuctioneers. The sale will begin at 6 p.m. Central.

Highlights of the 285-lot auction will be:

  • Lot 159: Large German ivory tankard and cover depicting the Battle of Guagemela, carved in the 17th century Ausberg-style. The cylindrical body carved in high relief depicting the Greek and Macedonian forces led by Alexander of Macedonia and the Persian forces led by Darius III. The lower rim carved with alternating scalloped sprays and lion masks, surmounted with a highly carved figural finial. 18 1/2 inches high x 10 inches wide, circa 19th century, estimate: $30,000-$50,000.
  • Lot 149: Three-piece Sevres-style gilt bronze clock garniture set, including a porcelain dial mantel clock in a bronze case, adorned with two dancing putti and enameled porcelain inserts depicting garden scenes and outlined by white enamel jewels, together with pair of gilt bronze, six-light candelabra similarly adorned. Clock with French circular brass two train bell strike movement stamped “Marti and Cie,” “1863 Chles M” and “87” with “Medalle de Bronze” award. Case stamped, “U1916.” Clock: 22 inches highy high x 20 1/2 inches wide x 5 inches diameter, candelabra: 25 1/2 inches high x 9 inches wide x 7 inches diameter, circa mid-19th century, estimate: $16,000-$24,000.
  • Lot 109: Pair of signed Henry Dasson urns with matte blue porcelain bodies in fine gilt bronze mounts. The necks with acanthine trim, the waists with a pierced palmette border interspersed with three satyr mask terminals joined by scrolling grapevines, raise on tapered legs terminating in double hooves, the shaped based centered by a grape cluster finial. Signed on the base, “Henry Dasson 1884.” Drilled. 18 1/2 inches, estimate: $15,000-$25,000.
  • Lot 129: KPM Berlin porcelain plaque painted to depict a scene from the Old Testament. Signed lower right, “F. Schmidt,” the verso with impressed scepter mark, with various impressed and incised marks. Plaque: 12 inches high x 15 inches wide; frame: 19 1/2 high x 23 inches wide, estimate: $10,000-$15,000.
  • Lot 139: Monumental Minton Majolica jardiniere, the rim encircled by a pond of lily flowers and pads, supported by three fantastically molded egrets flanked by three melusines. Provenance: Marilyn G. Karmason Collection; this is the piece that is illustrated on page 319 in Karmason-Stacke, Majolica A Complete History and Illustrated Survey. Restoration. 34 inches high x 24 inches diameter, circa 1871, estimate: $20,000-$30,000.
  • Lot 147: Louis XVI-style ormolu mounted center table with an inset leather top, the frieze with central ormolu plaques depicting putti with swags, framed by interlaced rosettes, the projected corners with masks, supported by tapered fluted legs decorated with garlands, joined by an X-stretcher mounted with an urn, on toupe feet, 29 inches high x 34 1/2 wide x 23 inches deep, circa mid-19th century, estimate: $6,000-$8,000.
  • Lot 169: Mario Buccellati silver and agate urn of baluster form with gadrooned rim on an incurved neck with chased acanthus leaf tips and handles surmounted by musical putti, the bulbous body with allover acanthus and applied agate acorn motif on a foliate gadrooned foot. Base stamped, “M. Buccellati” for Mario Buccellati also hallmarked, “800 94 (maker’s number with mark for Fascist Period 1933-1944) and, “MI” for Milano. 139 troy ounces. Across handles: 20 1/2 high x 13 1/2 inches, estimate: $11,000-$15,000.
