TAMPERE, Finland – Two Omega Speedmaster wristwatches, which were prizes awarded to the winning driver and navigator in a 1959 road rally, will be sold Sunday, March 18, at an Annmaris Auctions’ jewelry and watches auction. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Lot 1 in the auction is the champion driver’s Omega Speedmaster, reference number 2998-1, serial number 17301957. It was awarded to Martti Mäkinen, who is now 99 years old. The manually wound watch is worn from daily use and has a replaced Omega crown. It carries an estimate of €25,000-€35,000 ($30,800-$43,120).

Lot 2 is the Omega Speedmaster, reference number 2998-1, serial number 17301959, which comes from the original owner, Yrjä Paalanen, the navigator of the winning car. This watch is in good condition, having been serviced at the Omega factory around 20 years ago. It has an estimate of €20,000-€25,000 ($24,640-$30,800).

Word of the upcoming sale of these watches has brought attention to the auction company in central Finland.

“The last one of these I found from the Internet sold over $100,000 dollars, so they’re pretty good watches and we have a pair,” writes Ilkka Takala of Annmaris Auctions.

More than 70 fine watches will be sold at the auction.
