NEW YORK – Many traditional icons of the Eastern Orthodox Church—depicting Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, saints and angels—are featured in a Jasper52 online auction to be held Wednesday, April 18. These icons carry rich histories and religious symbolism. Absentee and Internet bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
One of the oldest and most beautiful icons in the online-only auction is titled Our Lady with Three Hands, which depicts the Madonna and Christ Child. This 18th century icon (above) measures 17 by 21 inches and has a $3,000-$3,500 estimate.
St. Mary is also revered in an early 20th century Russian icon titled Mothergod Mother of God of Grebenkaya. The 12½-by-10½-inch portrait of the Madonna and Christ Child is done in tempera/gold on a wooden board. From a private collection in Germany, this beautiful icon (below) has a $2,000-$3,000 estimate.
A 19th century Russian icon of Jesus in the auction has a silver-plated oklad cover. This 12-by-10 portrait has a $500-$600 estimate.
Christ’s Resurrection and the 12 Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church are depicted in a 19th century icon valued at $2,500-$3,000.
Often associated with hunters, St. Triphon is depicted on horseback and holding a falcon his arm. The icon of the early martyr has a $2,000-$3,000 estimate.
An 18th or 19th century icon depicting the prophet Elijah’s fiery ascent to Heaven is expected to sell for $2,000-$2,500.
Also offered in the 230-lot auction are many small bronze crosses, which were worn around one’s neck.
The auction will be held Wednesday, April 18, at 5 p.m. Eastern.
