Original ‘Snow White’ animation cel leads July 10 Turner sale
SAN FRANCISCO – Turner Auctions + Appraisals is pleased to present a Cabinet of Curiosities sale on July 10. It will feature more than 290 lots from multiple collectors and estates, and a wide range of items from around the world, dating from the 17th century to the present day. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Notable lots include an original animation cel from the production of Disney’s breakthrough film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The cel has been trimmed and applied to a woodgrain background as prepared by Courvoisier Galleries. It carries an estimate of $1,000 – $1,500.
Another standout is a 1717 hand-colored copperplate engraving entitled A Grand View of the Versailles Gardens and credited to Pierre Lepautre. It is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.
Among the many artworks in the sale lineup are paintings by Chuck J. Sabatino, Harry Raymond Henry, and David Allen Halbach; Jules Cheret lithographs; antique botanical plates by Mark Catesby; antique maps by Joan Blaeu; several bronze sculptures; a pen and ink drawing by Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz; and a selection of erotic photographs. The offerings include several pieces of furniture, including an Italian Rococo table and several games tables, as well as clocks from Tiffany and Leroy & Fils.
Choice porcelain, majolica, and china pieces come from Herend, Havilland, Gien, Limoges, Wedgwood, and Cauldon. Other lots showcase glassware by Lalique, Baccarat, and Steuben. The offerings feature sterling or silverplate tableware, serving ware, and flatware from Tiffany, Christofle, and George III. Pottery makers represented in the catalog include Daum, Studio Art, Utopian, and Rookwood, and also an extensive collection of Moorcroft.
Items that hail from Japan include prints, a gilt lantern, and a table box; lots originating in China include silk embroidered jackets, cloisonne pieces, vases, export ceramics, an incense burner, bronze pheasants, and an array of snuff bottles. Completing the sale are an antique altar pricket, carousel models and music boxes, books, ambro- and tintype images, and stereoscope Diableries photos.
