Studio paintings comprise the first 500 lots. Highlights from a diverse selection of artwork include an oil painting of a ship coming into port by Pietro Fragiacomo (lot 22, estimated between $1,500 and $2,000), a watercolor depicting gatherers at the shore by Melbourne Havelock Hardwick (lot 36, $700 to $900), and an oil painting of a 19th century pastoral view with distant mountains (lot 589, $700 to $900). Henry Moore’s Thirteen Standing Figures from the 1958 illustrated book Heads, Figures and Ideas (lot 448, $400 to $600) and a 20th century synchromist composition (lot 302, $1,000 to $1,500) from a private collection in Oceanport, N.J., are also available.
Session two, which features Country Americana (lots 501 – 1200), will include a great selection of Americana-style furnishings including baskets, paintings, quilts and stoneware, highlighted by approximately 65 lots from the collection of Nancy Skinner, co-owner of Skinner Inc., and her late husband Robert Skinner. The Skinners’ private collection was built over 60 years and demonstrates Bob Skinner’s impeccable taste in country furniture with old paint and surface, early American wrought iron, folk art, wooden ware, painted tin, silhouettes and children’s objects. Among this charming group of material are 13 painted velvet fruits and vegetables (lot 512, $200 to $300), eight small woven splint baskets (lot 503, $400 to 600), a late 19th century painted stuffed velvet toy rabbit figure on a turned wood base (lot 523, $200 to 300), and a 20th century country red-painted pine slant-back cupboard (lot 513, $300 to 500).
Notable examples of American furniture include a country classical cherry and tiger maple veneer bureau (lot 828, $300 to $500), a set of four Michael Dunbar green-painted Windsor sack-back knuckle-arm chairs (lot 878, $300 to $500), and a set of four Victorian Eastlake-type upholstered partial-gilt ebonized carved walnut parlor side chairs (lot 935, $300 to $400).
Two early ovoid stoneware jugs, one impressed “BOSTON,” and the other “CHARLESTOWN” (lot 674, $300 to $500), a late 19th century pieced and appliquéd red and green leaf pattern quilt (lot 751, $600 to $800), a blue-painted pine cupboard with paneled door (lot 772, $300 to $500), a silk and wool thread needlework sampler featuring alphabet panels over a record of seven members of the Michner family beginning in 1804 and ending in 1840 (lot 795, $300 to $500), and nine pieces of English blue transfer-decorated Staffordshire teaware (lot 1023, $300 to $400) are also on offer.
