PALMETTO, Fla. – Manatee Galleries Inc., a second-generation family business, will conduct a Dec. 1 auction of important Chinese export wares and Americana from a prestigious South Florida estate. Originally from Rochester, New York, the owner amassed this collection over a period of 50 years. In addition to this estate, Manatee Galleries will offer many other outstanding items that range from the late 17th century through the early 20th century period.

A highlight of the sale is a fabulous Kangxi period(1662-1722) famille verte charger with the Artemisia Leaf mark. It measures 15¼ inches in diameter and is in good condition. It is one of the finest famille verte chargers that Manatee has had the pleasure of selling, a company spokesperson said. The detail is exquisite, from the border that includes butterflies and peonies to the central figure of a lovely vase surrounded by dragons. The inner cartouches contain scenes — each different — depicting a dragon, koi fish and insects.

The estate contains a collection of Chinese and Mandarin punch bowls, in varying sizes and displaying beautiful paintings. Overall the punch bowls are in good condition. Another wonderful treasure from the estate is a set of six Derby yellow-ground botanical plates (Duesbury & Kean), circa 1800. They contain the blue crown, crossed batons and D marks. Each plate is painted with a specimen flower. They are named in blue in English, and three of the plates also contain the Latin name on the underside of the plate.

In the owner’s collection are two important 18th-century Philadelphia chairs attributed to William Savery. In addition there are wonderful pieces of tiger maple furniture and a 7-drawer Chippendale chest with a very strong tiger maple pattern in the grain.

Another highlight of the sale is an exceptional collection of Chinese export armorials. One of the top pieces is a Biblical plate titled ‘The Baptism of Christ.’
