NEW YORK – Auctions at Showplace will continue the fall auction season with an exciting sale on November 7. It will feature a diverse offering including Picasso ceramics, a selection of modern art, mid-century furnishings, Asian objects, antiquities, fine jewelry along with costume jewelry and luxury goods from prime New York Metropolitan area estates. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Highlights begin with a blue and white Pablo Picasso Hibou (owl) painted and glazed ceramic pitcher, marked ‘Edition Picasso Madoura’ on the bottom and estimated at $8,000-$12,000.
Also of note is a linear lithograph of a face in colors by Russian artist Alexej von Jawlensky, housed in a Heydenryk frame and estimated at $5,000-$10,000.
The Asian arts selection opens with a Chinese Neolithic period Liangzhu culture jade bi disc on a contemporary metal stand, estimated at $3,000-$5,000. It continues with a Chinese carved spinach jade ruyi scepter with auspicious bat and deer motifs over a shaped wood stand and a Chinese carved soapstone ruyi scepter with a prowling dragon, or Pixiu. Also included in the sale is a collection of antiquities ranging from ancient Greek and Roman glass to Pre-Columbian objects. A standout from the latter category is a Pre-Columbian carved Mexican speckled green jade figure, dating to circa 450-750 and estimated at $2,000-$4,000.
Fine art continues with an exciting grouping of prints and multiples. Chief among them is a hand-colored lithograph by Lyonel Feininger depicting the Gothic Spire of Gelmeroda which was one of the artist’s favorite subjects. It is estimated at $2,000-$4,000. Also on offer is Robert Rauschenberg’s Untitled (Arrow), a 1983 offset lithograph from an edition of 90 printed by Larry B. Wright Art Productions, New York, as well as Arthur Okamura’s 1960 San Francisco School abstract expressionist oil on canvas and Dale Payson’s large 2000 oil on canvas depicting a colorful fruit still life.
Decorative arts highlights begin with a Helen Shupla Santa Clara Pueblo ‘Melon’ blackware pottery vase, made in the circa 1970’s and signed by the artist on the bottom. It carries an estimate of $2,500-$3,500. Next is a Flavio Poli for Barovier Seguso Ferro Italian Art Deco pulegoso blown glass vase in green with gold leaf; a Bodil Manz eggshell porcelain vessel of a cylindrical form in black and white housed in a wood cage; and a pair of Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co. bone candlesticks in Italian terracotta.
