Delightful jewelry, estate art await at Aug. 28 Turner auction

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO – Turner Auctions + Appraisals will present a Summer Sale on August 28, starting at 10:30 am Pacific time. Besides numerous items from estates and consignors, the auction offers more than 360 lots, including collections of Russian Lomonosov porcelain figures; Victorian Nailsea bells, 19th-century blown glass canes and other whimseys; German ceramic and pewter beer steins; and fine jewelry. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Highlights of the upcoming sale include a collection of English and Irish Shell pattern sterling flatware with several makers’ marks, including George Gilliam, London; Phillip Weekes, Dublin, and Green & Cadbury. The pieces date to 1901 and 1904 and totals 88 pieces in all, which includes 13 serving pieces; 12 teaspoons; 10 vegetable spoons; 12 soup spoons; 11 dinner forks; 16 dessert forks; eight dinner knives; and eight butter knives. The flatware has an approximate total weight of 6078 grams and a $5,000-$7,000 estimate.

Jewelry selections of note include an EFFY multi-color sapphire, diamond and 14K white gold ring. It features 16 oval- and round-cut multi-color sapphires weighing approximately 7.5 carats, accented by 50 single-cut diamonds weighing an estimated 0.15 carat. The size 8 ring is estimated at $300-$500.

Leading the strong selection of prints is Pablo Picasso’s Square Head, a 1949 engraving from Carmen, number 276 from the edition of 289, with the artist’s signature on the justification folio. It is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

Also worthy is the 1957 book Chagall, featuring text by Jacques Lassaigne as well as 15 original Marc Chagall lithographs, including cover and frontispiece. Of the 15, 13 printed in colors and two in black. The book is estimated at $800-$1,200.

Rounding out the prints is Hoi Lebadang’s Horses Color etching and aquatint with embossing, signed in pencil, and numbered 170 of 275. It is estimated at $800-$1,200.

Decorative arts lots include a pair of Chinese cloisonne vases decorated with fruited and floral vines on yellow ground and estimated at $600-$800, as well as a Russian Lomonosov porcelain shepherd, offered with a porcelain shop display sign, estimated at $200-$300.

A final standout is a Palissy-style majolica plate, centering a crab amid a variety of sea life. It is estimated at $200-$300.
