Powerful portraits abound at Capsule Auctions Jan. 27
NEW YORK – On Thursday, January 27, beginning at 11 am Eastern time, Capsule Auctions presents LX: January Fine Art, a curated sale of American and European Fine Art. It features paintings, prints and works on paper from New York and New England collections including the collection of Seymour Stein and the estate of Leonard Alberts. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Notable artists whose works appear in the LX: January Fine Art auction include Clara Klinghoffer, Lowell Nesbitt, Leonard Alberts, Eugene Jansson and Jean Lucrat. Prominent themes of the works in the lineup include portraits, the male figure, still lifes, landscapes, Western imagery and sailors.
A highlight among the portraits in the sale is a Cubism-inspired work by Leonard Alberts in which warm tones and geometric shapes create a sharp-looking seated figure. It is estimated at $400-$600.
Chief among the sailor-themed selections in the sale is a watercolor titled Sailors on Leave, which depicts a cartoonish parade of French sailors admiring women. Created by an unknown artist, the work is estimated at $200-$400.
Offerings of note from the collection of Seymour Stein is a painting titled Welder by Stanley Twardowicz. The portrait, which dates to 1943, showcases Twardowicz’s skill in realist representation; he later went on to be associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement. Welder is estimated at $500-$800.
