BOSTON – Filled with more than 600 choice items from across the decades, RR Auction‘s November 18 Marvels of Modern Music auction will be a smash hit. View the fully illustrated catalog on LiveAuctioneers.

Top lots include a stage-worn and photo-matched outfit from Prince’s Musicology Tour. The brilliant custom-made two-piece suit worn on stage by Prince during the Musicology Live 2004ever Tour consists of a bright red jacket with peaked lapels, three front buttons, a single vent in the back, and a pair of crisp off-white slacks. The suit, which is estimated at $30,000-$50,000, comes from the personal collection of custom tailor Maurice Hood, who also provided the four-ply purple silk tuxedo that Prince wore at the 77th Academy Awards when he presented the Best Original Song Oscar on February 27, 2005.

‘Please Please Me’ album fully signed by the Beatles, est. $25,000-$35,000
‘Please Please Me’ album fully signed by the Beatles, est. $25,000-$35,000

Another standout is a Please Please Me album fully signed by the Beatles and estimated at $25,000-$35,000. The consignor indicates that the signatures were obtained at the Adelphi Cinema in Slough, England, in 1963. As it happens, the Beatles played the Adelphi twice in that year: first on May 18, four days before the release of Please Please Me, and the first night of the group’s breakout tour with Roy Orbison; and on November 5, a day after their Royal Command Performance at London’s Prince of Wales Theatre in the presence of the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. Any album signed by all four members is highly desirable — roughly 75 signed copies of this title are known to exist.

Also of note is a large Island Records poster signed by Bob Marley and The Wailers and estimated at $20,000-$25,000. The Island Records promotional poster was issued for the Catch a Fire album, and the entire band is represented on the reverse in ballpoint with the following inscriptions and signatures: “JAH RASTA FARI, PROSPERITY, Bob Marley,” “Aston Family Man Barrett,” “Peter Tosh, Love Jah,” and “Bunny.” It is one of the largest examples of Marley’s signature that RR Auction has offered, and was rendered just weeks after Catch a Fire‘s release.

Signed Nirvana ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ picture disc, est. $12,000-$15,000

Certain to turn heads and lift paddles is a signed Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit picture disc estimated at $12,000-$15,000. The fully signed picture disc for the Nirvana grunge anthem boasts bold autographs, including the playfully vain “I am a rock star, Kurdt.” inscription from Cobain, against what is arguably the band’s most iconic album cover.

Autographed photo of Ray Charles, est. $10,000-$15,000

Rounding out the highlights is a super-rare autographed vintage glossy 8in by 10in close-up photo of Ray Charles in his trademark sunglasses, estimated at $10,000-$15,000. It is accompanied by a letter of provenance stating that it originated from the collection of Derek Mills, an executive of BBC Radio 2. Authentic Ray Charles material is extremely rare and signed Ray Charles photographs are virtually unknown.

Other icons represented in the sale include Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Who, Queen, Bob Dylan, Billie Holliday, and Elvis Presley.

The Marvels of Modern Music will conclude on November 18. For more information, go to www.rrauction.com.
