Property from Seymour Stein collection at Capsule Auctions, July 28
NEW YORK – Capsule Auctions will hold two auctions on Thursday, July 28. OS: From The Collection of Seymour Stein will commence at 10 am Eastern time, and Deco + Design III will take place at 3 pm Eastern time. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The first of the two presents a new auction format for the auction house’s site-specific sales. The OS in its title stands for On-Site; it will be an online-only sale featuring property that may be directly picked up from the collector’s warehouse in Westhampton beach, Long Island. On Site From the Collection of Seymour Stein will feature art, furniture and design items reflecting Stein’s fantastic taste.
Deco + Design III is the latest in the popular Deco + Design series from Capsule Auctions. It will include items from the collection of Seymour Stein as well as other New York and New England estates and collections. The auction will feature paintings, ceramics, sculpture, silver, design objects and furniture.
A highlight of the earlier On-Site sale is a bronze sculpture by Robert Tait McKenzie. Titled The Competitor and dating to 1909, it is signed and dated to the base and features a beautiful brown patina. It carries an estimate of $5,000-$10,000.
Design-forward items in the warehouse include the Bruno Weil (Bewe) Cabinet Model B290 for Thonet, which is constructed in ebonized birch and tubular steel. Its estimate is $4,000-$6,000.
Another highlight of the sale are two chairs by William “Billy” Haines that were displayed in the Desert Room of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. A leading designer of his era, Billy Haines was invited to design a room for the historical event. His Desert Room featured a Georgia O’Keeffe work hung above a sumptuous fireplace, California Joshua wood walls and mohair curtains, and these leather-clad wood chairs. A Christie’s exhibition label is affixed to one seat.
