Premier Americana steps into auction spotlight at Jeffrey S. Evans, Nov. 17-19

MT. CRAWFORD, Va. – Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates will hold its 43rd Semi-Annual Premier Americana Auction on Thursday, November 17, Friday, November 18, and Saturday, November 19. The event features nearly 1,500 lots of high-quality, fresh-to-the-market material from several important collections as well as a large selection of choice objects from various individuals, estates and institutions. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Day One, beginning at 9 am Eastern time on November 17, will feature the collection of Donald Putterman of San Francisco; material deaccessioned from the Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont; and property from the estate of famed antiques dealer Peter Tillou of Litchfield, Connecticut. The day’s offerings will include 18th- and 19th-century glass and lighting of all types, with large selections of free-blown, pressed, and blown-molded articles, as well as American historical and pictorial flasks and bottles. Highlights include an outstanding Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. pair of pressed open-work baskets on pedestals in a brilliant, deep shade of amethyst, estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Day Two, beginning at 9 am Eastern time on November 18, will showcase the fourth and final session of the American historical transferware collection of Nick Routson of Phoenix, Arizona; property from the Ann and Clay Ring family collection of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; property from the estate of Clarence and Coralena Smith of Romney, West Virginia; as well as material deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum of Richmond, Virginia and also Old Salem Museum & Gardens of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The lineup will include a broad selection of American historical Staffordshire transferware, 19th-century American folk pottery, country accessories, baskets, samplers, quilts and additional English and Chinese ceramics.

Highlights for Day Two are led by a mid-19th-century Daniel Seagle (Lincoln County, North Carolina) 15-gallon four-handled stoneware storage jar, estimated at $5,000-$8,000; a Staffordshire American historical transfer-printed platter bearing the arms of Delaware; a Bennington flint-enamel Rockingham-glaze figural Swiss lady change cover; and a bold, oversized 16-gallon West Virginia merchant’s stoneware jar with extensive cobalt decoration.

Day Three, beginning at 9 am Eastern time on November 19, contains art and objects from the Ann and Clay Ring family collection of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; property from the collection of Kathy and Dr. Joseph Arvay of Mendham, New Jersey; selections from the Americana collection of Barbara and the late Charlie Hunter of Staunton, Virginia; as well as material deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum of Richmond, Virginia and also Old Salem Museum & Gardens of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. On offer will be a fine selection of Virginia and other Southern material; 18th- and 19th-century formal and country furniture, including painted examples; American folk and fine art; historical and Civil War material, including firearms and edge weapons; 19th-century coin silver; antiquarian books; early American flags; and a selection of Oriental rugs and carpets.

Highlights of note include a Civil War period 34-star Kansas Statehood American flag, estimated at $5,000-$8,000; a New England Queen Anne tiger maple and birch tray-top tea table retaining its original red-painted surface and carrying an estimate of $10,000-$15,000; a Puffy Sleeve Artist folk art hollow-cut silhouette of a lady with a parasol and a bird, which has an estimate of $6,000-$9,000; a newly discovered true first edition of The Book Of Mormon, published in 1830 in Palmyra, New York; an American folk art carved and painted Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco or cigar store trade figure with Kentucky history; and a Jackson-Pierce presidential White House service engraved glass wine cooler or rinser, recently discovered in a Virginia thrift store.
