SARASOTA, FLA. — Sarasota Estate Auction will showcase important Chinese artifacts, great silver and fine art in its next two-day sale, taking place Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21. Headlining this auction, which contains more than 1,500 lots, will be a Qing dynasty Mandarin court robe and a pair of polychrome Han warriors, along with art from Grandma Moses. The sale will also feature part two of a lifetime collection of sterling silver, including a Georg Jensen sterling compote and a Chinese Export silver centerpiece. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The Georg Jensen Grapevine sterling compote will be one of the featured objects in day one of the two-day auction. This mid-20th century piece was originally designed by Jensen in 1918. Purchased from Sotheby’s Toronto in 1991, it has an estimate of $2,000-$3,000.
Also appearing in the day one lineup is a Chinese Export silver centerpiece bowl that weighs 106 troy ounces. The bowl rests on a tripod of serpent-like dragon figures and has two ornate dragon handles. Marked on the bottom is the phrase ‘Wang Hing 90,’ a Canton and Hong Kong silversmith who was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The bowl is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.
The first lot that will be offered on day two is a Qing dynasty Mandarin Imperial court robe. It has eight circular panels and is impeccably embroidered with powerful gilt-thread five-claw dragons, which are a prominent design on the midnight blue satin silk robe. The bottom third of the robe has an embroidered design of turbulent seas over elegant diagonal striping. It also has golden satin silk cuffs that further reflect the importance of this regal Mandarin court robe, as it depicts the Chinese countryside and its people. It carries an estimate of $20,000-$35,000.
Following the robe is a pair of polychrome Han warriors that are estimated at $10,000-$18,000. These warriors have uniquely expressive faces and minimal paint loss commensurate with age. Each is supported by a Lucite stand. Documented thermoluminescence from Daybreak Achaeometric Laboratory Services dating these figures at 2740 A.D., plus or minus 570 years.
Anna Mary Robertson Moses, aka Grandma Moses (1860-1961), was an American artist who spent decades living a rural, agricultural life that she would later feature in her paintings. She was a pioneer of her day, painting with a unique style and finding inspiration in the world around her. An oil on Masonite titled Grandma Goes to the City will be auctioned on the second day of the sale, and has an estimate of $50,000-$60,000. The work is signed at the lower left, framed and under plexiglass.
