NEW YORK – On Thursday, November 18, starting at 6pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will conduct a sale of Americana Quilts & Textiles. Highlights of the auction include a circa-1880s or -1890s cotton Mennonite strip stars quilt, all hand-pieced and hand-quilted and found in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. This fine specimen, which is decorated by eight-pointed stars placed against a backdrop of peach orange and olive green hues, measures 76in by 78in and is described as being in “excellent, never washed condition, with a couple of small, faint age spots and no wear.” It is estimated at $800-$1,000.
Another standout is a cotton red and white Princess Feather quilt known to be antique but lacking a more specific date. The lot notes state that the quilt is in “Mint, Unused, Unwashed, Condition … There are no issues with this quilt.” It spans 82in by 84in and carries an estimate of $1,500-$2,000.
Rounding out the highlights is a circa-1915-1920 cotton and cotton sateen Holmes County Ohio Amish Friendship Quilt – a type of quilt that was usually made to welcome new neighbors. Each quilt block bears the embroidered initials of one of the welcoming neighbors. One is marked with the name Yoder, which might possibly be the surname of the family for whom the quilt was made.
