FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Northern Virginia’s Quinn’s Auction Galleries will conduct a Thursday, July 15 auction featuring a boutique selection of rare and collectible posters, prints and works on paper. The expertly curated sale featuring 145 high-quality lots will commence at 2 pm ET. Bid absentee or live via the Internet through LiveAuctioneers.

Featured: Works by James Montgomery Flagg, Grant Wood, Patrick Nagel, Philip Pearlstein; plus six Dali lithos and three Erte serigraphs

Posters chosen for the auction include designs by Keith Haring, J.C. Leyendecker and Louis John Rhead. One of the category’s highlights is James Montgomery Flagg’s (American, 1870-1960) iconic depiction of Uncle Sam pointing a finger, with the message “I WANT YOU FOR U.S. ARMY – NEAREST RECRUITING STATION.” Created in 1917 and published by Leslie Judge Co., New York, it has a framed size of 42 by 31½ inches. The pre-sale estimate is $4,000-$6,000.

A collection of witty 1970-1985 pop-art posters by Stephen Frykholm (American, b. 1942-), includes nine colorful designs from the Herman Miller Summer Picnic poster suite. Each of the 42 by 26-inch (framed) serigraphs depicts a type of food enjoyed al fresco, including corn on the cob, cherry pie, watermelon and other summer-garden delights. The group lot is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

A broad offering of prints includes desirable works by a who’s who of artists. Leading the six lithographs by Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989) is a 1963 color work titled Mystical Rose Madonna. Measuring 32 by 31 inches (framed), it is pencil-signed and numbered 12/200. Estimate: $2,000-$3,000

Quintessentially Midwestern in its theme, a 1937 lithograph by Grant Wood (American, 1891-1942) is titled Seed Time and Harvest. Artist-signed and dated in pencil, its framed size is 18½ x 14½ inches. The auction estimate is $1,000-$2,000.

The inimitable Art Deco style of Romain De Tirtoff, better known as “Erte” (NY/France, 1892-1990), can be seen in three serigraphs entered in the sale. A circa-1986 embossed serigraph titled Harmony depicts an elegant lady seated on a gold-tasseled pink cushion and measures 42 by 37¾ inches (framed). It is artist-signed in pencil at its lower right and is offered with a $600-$900 estimate.

Illustrator Patrick Nagel (American, 1945-1984) is best known for his glamorous, highly stylized depictions of women. Bidders in Quinn’s July 15 auction will have the opportunity to bid on a Nagel serigraph titled Joan Collins (No. 411). As the name implies, the subject is the sophisticated British film star whom American audiences loved to hate in her role as the vengeful Alexis Colby on the original TV series Dynasty. Nagel’s serigraph, numbered 20/150, has a framed size of 36¼ by 28¼ inches and comes to auction with a $400-$600 estimate.

LeRoy Neiman (American, 1921-2012) is renowned for his vibrant expressionist paintings and screenprints of athletes, musicians and events. In 1981 he created Panteras (Panthers), a depiction of exotic dancers in brilliantly hued costumes. A serigraph of that artwork, numbered 165/500, is presented in a 33½ by 45½ inch frame and entered in the auction with a $300-$500 estimate.

Two 20th-century artists’ views of France will be offered. John Taylor Arms’ (American, 1887-1953) third-state etching titled Lace; Place Victor Hugo, Lisieux measures 9½ by 13 inches and is estimated at $200-$300. Also carrying a $200-$300 estimate, Leonard Russell Squirrell’s (American, 1893-1979) circa-1920 mezzotint Notre Dame, Paris comes from an edition of 75 signed proofs and is sized 19¼ by 14 3/8 inches (sheet).

Philip Pearlstein’s (American, b. 1924-) accomplished drawing titled Two Nudes was created in 1965 and is pencil-signed by the artist. Framed, it measures 21 by 23¼ inches. Estimate: $700-$1,000. Also worthy of note is a 1973 aquatint etching by Lowell Nesbitt (American, 1933-1993) titled Three Irises. Signed and dated, it is number 35 of 100 and has a printer’s stamp on verso that reads “Mohd. Omer Khalil.” The 30 by 44½-inch (framed) etching is entered with a $300-$400 estimate.
