NANTUCKET, Mass. – Rafael Osona Auctions will offer fine art, furnishings and décor
from the summer Shawkemo Hills, Nantucket estate of Jennie K. Scaife, formerly of Pittsburgh, Palm Beach and Beverly Hills on Saturday, July 18, starting at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time. With some additions, the auction will consist of more than 400 lots. The collection is capricious, eccentric and playfully elegant. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
Yachtsmen and glitterati alike will aspire to Nicola Simbari’s Porto D’Ischia, a Neo-Impressionist hot-summer view of a famed Ischia beach (above). Pop artist Helmet Koller’s Red Eyed Tree Frogs edges on playful. Still Life in Blue by John Powell and a striking pair of 19th century theorems offer unanticipated movement and color.
Ten plein air paintings by contemporary Nantucket and New York City artist Illya Kagan top a significant selection of Nantucket Art spanning the 20th–21st centuries, including paintings by the undisputed dean of the Nantucket artist colony, Frank Swift Chase, six paintings by James Francis Barker, as well as works by Andrew Shunney, Roy Bailey and Robert Stark Jr. Don’t miss 10 watercolor paintings by Doris and Richard Beer or John Austin’s iconic Polly’s Place plus C. Robert Perrin, Michael Keane and others.
Among the paintings by artist contemporaries, not to be missed are Forrest Anderson Rodts, Joan Albaugh, Kerry Hallam and James Cromartie.
Bidders looking for atmospherics and soft washes of color will be well impressed by Gerald Taber’s mid-century take on Nantucket’s Old South and Island Service Wharves. Also of note is a hand-colored block print by esteemed American printmaker Eliza Draper Gardner.
Rafael Osona Auctions has long been the go-to source among collectors, students and traders of Nantucket baskets and this sale offers some choice ones. A sought-after José Formoso Reyes lidded Friendship Basket tops the July 18 offerings including two nests and a 20-inch serving tray by Bill and Judy Sale.
Jennie K. Scaife’s vast waterfront grounds and pavilion housed eight lots of Gloster teak garden furniture. There’s also wicker, rattan and nearly a dozen porcelain garden stool lots.
Blue and White abounds in upholstered furnishings and accessories, but it far from trumps the custom-restored 19th century blond mahogany and mother of pearl, abalone and seashell encrusted chaise lounge or the impressive vintage Alfonso Marina Dominica II multiwood inlaid center table.
Birds and bees alike will flock to a Hippolyte Boulanger & Cie choisy-le-roi majolica porcelain 19th century jardinière. It’s a showstopper, as is an especially shipshape Maitland Smith double dory glass top cocktail table – perfect for seaside décor – alongside ship’s wheels and a signed pair of 19th century captain’s spyglasses.
Look for Steuben, Lalique, Christofle, sterling flatware, vintage quilts, lamps, a 112-piece table service among four lots of Henroit Quimper, décor including a Georgian mahogany circa 1800 and a variety of other chests of drawers, tea caddies, andirons, case goods and carpets.
Jewelry by David Yurman, Tiffany & Co., Glenaan Elliot and Guy Beard complement a fine South Sea Pearl Lariat, among nine additional lots representing South Sea, Tahitian and Akoya pearl jewelry.
