CRAWFORD, Va. – Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates will conduct its 35th semiannual Americana and Fine Antiques Auction Nov. 8-10. Consisting of a diverse range of rare and desirable material, the large sale promises to be a noteworthy event. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
The three-day auction features the Alvina Breckel Collection of 19th-century American glass and lighting, property from an important Virginia private collection, and material deaccessioned by several institutions, including the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts.
Session I, beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, Nov. 8, and Session II, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, will be devoted exclusively to the important 19th-century American glass and lighting collection of the late Alvina Breckel of Oley, Pennsylvania, and Winnetka, Illinois. One of the finest assemblages of cup plates, lacy period salts and children’s articles to ever appear on the auction block, the Breckel Collection will serve as a touchstone for the current market.
Session III, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov.10, will include the firm’s usual fine selection of rare Virginia and other Southern material; 18th- and 19th-century formal and country furniture; American fine and decorative arts; folk pottery; 19th-century coin silver; Shenandoah Valley and other folk art; a fine selection of late 18th-/early 19th-century English ceramic figures, many ex-collection of C.B. Kidd; Shenandoah Valley long rifles; early quilts and other textiles; and Native American material.
Highlights in the Saturday session include a recently discovered pair of folk art watercolor and ink portraits of North Carolina sitters by the Guilford Limner; an important Wythe County, Virginia, paint-decorated poplar blanket chest, signed and dated; a fine Great Road decorated earthenware jar, likely Cain pottery; and a William Aiken Walker oil on board genre scene in excellent original condition.
“We are very excited to bring such an outstanding group of fresh material to the market for this auction, most of which will sell unreserved. The Breckel Collection is truly world-class and should provide an interesting gauge for the market at present. Additionally, our offerings of Virginia and other Southern material are especially strong and provide numerous unique buying opportunities for collectors of all levels,” said Jeffrey S. Evans, company president.
The firm will also host a fall lecture series event on Friday, Nov. 9, at 6 pm, when Evans will present “Welcome to the Sites House: Unspoiled Vernacular Architecture in the Virginia Backcountry.” The event is free and open to the public.
