Rare glass adds sparkle to Jeffrey Evans Americana sale Nov. 12-14

MOUNT CRAWFORD, Va. – Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates will conduct its 39th Semi-Annual Premier Americana Auction on Nov. 12-14. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
The three-day event features historic property from estates and collections in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Vermont, Connecticut, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, New York, New Jersey, West Virginia, Indiana and Ohio, plus museum deaccessions. With nearly 1,500 lots of high-quality material, the sale is sure to generate excitement in the collecting community, providing a gauge for the current market across multiple categories.
Day One, beginning at 9:30 a.m. EST on Thursday, Nov. 12, will kick the weekend off with a fine selection of 18th & 19th century glass and lighting. The diverse offerings include free-blown, pattern-molded and pillar-molded wares; bottles and flasks; a fine collection of colored pressed flint glass, including many rare vases and candlesticks; outstanding whale oil and fluid lamps; early kerosene lighting, including cut overlay examples; a large selection of pressed lacy, including rare hollowware, salts, and cup plates; 18th century European drinking vessels; Bohemian glass including goblets with American scenes; cut overlay including cologne bottles; plus more.
Noteworthy items include a fine Sandwich pressed hen covered dish in shiny translucent jade green, a rare Thomas Cains pattern-molded whale oil/fluid stand lamp with fluted font and swirled stem, an unrecorded Sandwich pressed lacy glass sugar bowl, and an extremely rare pair of small dolphin scallop base candlesticks in an unrecorded deep purple blue and opaque white.
Day Two, beginning at 9:30 a.m. EST on Friday, Nov. 13, will feature part one of the ceramics collection of James Dunn, Springfield, Vt.; and the early iron collection of the late James C. Leonard, Jamestown, N.C. The day’s offerings include a large collection of 18th & 19th century Staffordshire ceramics, including rare figures of all types; pearlware; Prattware; creamware; an immense selection of transferware in all colors and forms featuring historical, romantic, and floral patterns; children’s toys; gaudy wares; Delft wares; a large collection of 18th & 19th century ironware, including all types of hearth and domestic articles; early lighting; door hinges, locks, handles, and latches.
Noteworthy objects for Day Two include a rare pair of 19th century Staffordshire pearlware large rabbit figures with excellent coloration, an impressive pair of Staffordshire pearlware large lion figures, modeled after the Medici lions, and an unusual Staffordshire pearlware small figure of a lion with rich red glaze body.

Day Three, beginning at 9:30 a.m. EST on Saturday, Nov. 14, will feature material from many prominent collections from throughout the eastern U.S. The day’s offerings will consist of our usual fine selection of rare Virginia and other Southern material; 18th and 19th century formal and country furniture; American fine and decorative arts; folk pottery; antique firearms and accessories including over 20 long rifles; Civil War and other historical material; 19th century coin silver; Native American objects; Shenandoah Valley and other folk art; and textiles including samplers and quilts.
Highlights for Day Three include an important John James Trumbull Arnold (1812-1865) folk art double portrait of the Parsons children of Piedmont, Va. (now West Virginia), dated 1856, an unrecorded example that is completely fresh to the market; a rare Shenandoah Valley of Virginia paint-decorated yellow pine bentwood box, attributed to the Barb Family of Shenandoah County, Va.; an important Confederate Civil War presentation sword and scabbard, marked for James Conning of Mobile Ala., presented to Capt. George Wilson Hammond, by the men of Co. D 60th Regiment Virginia Volunteers in 1862, descended directly in the family; a fine and rare pair of Cary’s pocket globes, each with original shagreen case, and in excellent condition; an extremely rare doll or salesman sample paint-decorated “fancy” side chair in untouched surface; a scarce Sojourner Truth CDV signed verso; a fine Shenandoah Valley of Virginia paint-decorated yellow pine “turkey breast” stand table; and a fine inlaid Plains Indian pipe tomahawk; plus much more.
