MT. CRAWFORD, Va. – Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates will offer nearly 500 catalogued lighting lots in a Saturday, March 27 auction featuring to late kerosene period lamps, cut overlays, figural and figural stems, metal lamps and lanterns. Additionally, there will be Victorian hanging, library, art glass, and opalescent lamps, as well as coveted parts and accessories consisting of chimneys, burners, shades, lamp fillers, match holders, smoke bells and more. The sale is 99.5% unreserved and will feature Internet live bidding through www.LiveAuctioneers.com.
Several different consignments to the sale have produced a number of wonderful examples of rare kerosene period lighting. Auction house co-owner Jeff Evans is especially proud to present an important part of the Bill Courter lighting collection, which makes up more than half of the sale. As Evans explained, “Bill is known primarily for his expertise in Aladdin and central draft-type lighting, but only those close to him were aware of the incredible collection of lighting from the earlier kerosene periods that he’s been accumulating for more than 30 years.”
Within the Courter collection of lamps are eight marriage/wedding examples, five Onion/Eaton lamps, and eleven Atterbury Swans. Evans added, “We are thrilled to be able to showcase this very important collection. It is unquestionably one of the most exceptional lighting consignments we have ever handled.”
Other notable lots include an extremely rare cranberry opalescent Stars and Stripes globe, of which only two or three examples are known to exist today, from the Larry and Diana Nellans collection; an 8-inch-high Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. blown-molded emerald green Beehive font on a deep amethyst base, and a 10-inch-high Marbrie Loop lamp from the Dorothy J. Gooch collection that is colorless with green loops – an extremely rare Marbrie Loop color. The sale includes many other rare opalescent and colored stand and finger lamps, rare EAPG lamps including many Coin examples, Minerva, Three Face, etc.
An uncatalogued session of parts and accessories, sold as tray and box lots, will be conducted on Friday, March 26, 2010 beginning at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Bidding on the uncatalogued portion of the sale is limited to in-house participants.
A free appraisal day will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from 1-4 p.m. Private individuals may bring up to three items (or photos) for a free verbal appraisal. An appointment is not necessary.
