Rare scientific instruments take spotlight at Capo Auction Jan. 24

NEW YORK – Renowned Capo Auction Fine Art and Antiques in Long Island City will present their first auction of the New Year on Saturday, Jan., 24, beginning at 11 a.m. Eastern with the spotlight on a collection of rare French and Swiss antique scientific instruments.

In addition to these antique scientific instruments, Capo Auction is featuring a selection of mid-century modern and other furniture, various bronze figures, fine art and contemporary pieces, all from multiple estates.

A scientific instrument in the collection already getting much attention is a Swiss lacquered brass goniometer, late 19th century, signed on the stand “Societe Genevoise Instruments Physique & Mecanique Geneve.” The instrument, which is 15 1/4 inches high, sold at Christies, South Kensington, London, on May 30, 1996. It carries a $4,000-$6,000 estimate.

Others offered are a French telescope theodolite instrument, 19th century, of lacquered brass and signed on the horizontal circle “E L’Orieux. a Paris, No. 3 Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine,” estimated at $2,000-$3,000, and a French lacquered brass transit theodolite, late 19th century, indistinctly signed on the horizontal circle “Brunner freres a Paris,” estimate: $4,000-$6,000.

In the art arena, Capo Auction is also featuring an after Guido Reni (Italian, 1575-1642) oil on canvas of St. Sebastian, late 18th century. Framed, with a canvas size of 51 by 38 inches, the painting of the martyred saint is estimated at $20,000-$25,000. Also, a Ferdinand Parpan (French, 1902-2004) patinated bronze figure titled Trompettiste (1935-1940) is initialed, signed and numbered 3/8. It stands 57 inches tall and is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.
