NEW YORK – The Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones are the top attractions in a psychedelic rock concert poster auction that will be conducted online by Jasper52 on Saturday, April 25. No less than a dozen posters for each of the legendary bands are offered in this 125-lot auction. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.

An unusual version of the Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley “Blue Rose” poster for the Grateful Dead’s 1978 New Year’s Eve gig at Winterland is a progressive proof sheet made during the printing process. The sheet (above) has only the magenta and yellow ink runs, resulting in its different appearance. Also on the bill were the Blues Brothers and the New Riders of the Purple Sage (est. $250-$500).

Panther Hall in Fort Worth, Texas, was the venue for a February 1970 Grateful Dead concert, which produced one of the most desirable and rare Grateful Dead posters ever. The large size and thin paper the posters were printed on make them susceptible to damage. Interestingly, this poster (below) has a drawing on the back that is a sketch for another Panther Hall poster featuring the Byrds. This is a piece of original art and a rare poster all in one (est. $750-$1,500).

A rare poster for the June 1972 show at Winterland that featured the Rolling Stones was created by artist David Singer, who signed the work offered in the auction. The lightweight paper stock and a low print run contribute to the scarcity today. Due to its popularity, the poster was later reprinted, but this one is an original (est. $500-$1,000).

RST Concerts Inc. produced the Stones’ 2002-2003 “Licks” world tour poster, which measures 34 inches wide by 22 inches high. Because the posters were printed on paper they are hard to find in nice condition (est. $125-$250).

“The Sound” is one of artist Wes Wilson’s best and most widely known images. The curvaceous woman dancing in the nude was a representation of the era. The popularity of this poster led to several different printings. The one offered here is known as the OP-2 and has magenta-colored ink; the OP-3 has purple-colored ink. All three are quite scarce due to small print runs and the poster’s popularity (est. $500-$1,000).
