Roland Auctions to sell single-owner Asian art collection, March 13
NEW YORK – Roland Auctions NY will present its largest single-owner collection of Asian art to date with a 220-lot auction on Monday, March 13. Titled “A Private Collection of Chinese and Asian Objects” and timed for New York City’s Asia Week, this sale includes specimens of the first order not seen in the marketplace for decades. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
Highly desirable ceremonial, devotional and utilitarian objects accomplished in gold, silver, bronze and jade are complemented by a small selection of ornaments and jewelry. Also featured in this auction are numerous folios and hand scrolls attributed to Huang Binhong, among others.
“Given the quality of this material, we expect established blue-chip collectors to compete with new buyers from the Chinese mainland. Moreover, considering the breadth of this collection we are guaranteed to captivate everyone from the well-established connoisseur to new collectors just now entering the market,” said William J. Roland, owner and principal auctioneer.
Featured among the array of masterfully crafted objects are several incised gold sutra sheets, gold repoussé figural plaques, gold animal-form ornaments, and a gold clad bird-form ewer (below).
Additional items include sets of gilt silver and incised prayer book covers, a gilt bronze Bodhisattva, and gilt silver bowls, cups and boxes.
Interspersed among the Asian articles in this auction is an offering of American and European fine and decorative arts. These non-Asian pieces include 18th and early 19th century furniture, porcelain and lighting. Western fine art includes paintings and drawings by Darrel Austin and a large Antoni Tapies etching.
