DOUGLASS, Kan. – The Pickard collection of author Alan Reed and quality pieces of Royal Bayreuth from the Bob Gollmar collection will share center stage at Woody Auction’s next auction, slated for Saturday, May 14, starting at 9:30 am Central time. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Royal Bayreuth Santa items from the Gollmar estate will be led by a full-figure wall pocket red Santa marked Royal Bayreuth with the original label, estimated at $3,000-$6,000, and a green Santa lemonade pitcher with an attached handle marked Royal Bayreuth, estimated at $1,000-$2,500. These two lots in particular are expected to attract keen bidder interest because they appeal to collectors of both Santa Claus and Royal Bayreuth.

Royal Bayreuth was a unique, hard white-paste porcelain manufactured in Tettau, Germany, with its heyday lasting from 1795 through 1917. The company closed in 2019. Dinnerware, dining accessories, coffee and tea sets were its main product line, but the wide number of collector items the factory produced are just as fascinating. Royal Bayreuth is enormously popular with collectors, and the pieces in the Bob Gollmar collection are of the highest quality. Rare pieces will be featured in the auction, helping to round out any serious collection.

Other pieces from the Gollmar collection include a cheetah creamer marked Royal Bayreuth, estimated at $1,000-$2,000; a Mt. Washington decorated Burmese art glass vase with enamel rose decor and a poem by Thomas Hood, estimated at $1,000-$1,500; a pair of unmarked Royal Bayreuth fox candlestick holders, with each fox depicted looking over their left shoulder, estimated at $1,000-$3,000.

Pickard China is a family owned and operated porcelain decorating and manufacturing company based in Antioch, Illinois. The company was founded in 1893 and continues to produce ceramic tableware and art ware today. Its sales are primarily in fine china dinnerware, decorative accessories and collectibles, and it ranks among the finest china made anywhere in the world. Like Royal Bayreuth, it is hugely popular.

Alan B. Reed, whose collection of Pickard is featured in this auction, is no novice. In fact, he is the author of The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Pickard, a definitive reference guide to serious collectors of Pickard. A few items in his collection up for bid include a Pickard coffee set decorated with peacocks and comprising a coffee pot, matching cream and sugar, two cups and two saucers; a Pickard coffee set in the Rosa Emeraldus pattern, made up of a coffee pot, a tray and matching cream and sugar, which is featured in Reed’s book; and a two-handled Pickard vase in the Dahlia Rubra pattern, artist-signed A. Richter, boasting gold with platinum highlights and also featured in Reed’s book. The two-handled vase carries an estimate of $750-$1,500.

Other items from the Alan Reed collection include a vase marked Pitkin & Brooks Studios that has an Arabic design with green, yellow and maroon tones, gold highlights and a mark indicating it dates to circa 1903-1910. Its estimate is $500-$1,000.
