BOSTON – RR Auction‘s Fine Autographs and Artifacts auction, ending October 13, brings more than 800 unique and unusual pieces to the auction block. This sale offers an unparalleled depth of diversity from presidential autographs to music memorabilia. Highlights include a William Henry Harrison signature as president, styled “W. H. Harrison” and rendered in ink on an off-white vellum slip clipped from a larger document with the Harrison signature above the printed heading, “By the President,” and also signed by Secretary of State Daniel Webster. With his presidency lasting only one month, anything signed by Harrison as Chief Executive is extraordinarily rare. It is estimated at $25,000-$35,000.

Also on offer is a unique autographed portrait from Albert Einstein’s trip to Cuba. The vintage matte-finish photo of Einstein taken in Havana in December 1930 is signed in the upper border in fountain pen, “Albert Einstein, Pasadena, 1931.” The lower border is marked “El Encanto,” which is the name of the department store where the portrait was captured. It is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Among other featured lots is an Abraham Lincoln signed check, payable to his brother-in-law, C. M. Smith, and dated May 25, 1860. At the time Lincoln wrote this check, he had just been nominated as his party’s candidate for president at the Republican National Convention in Chicago on May 18. This superb piece of Lincolniana is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

Rounding out the highlights is another check from a president, this one connected to Thomas Jefferson. The Bank of the United States check was filled out and signed by him, payable to Henry Ingle and dated November 23, 1793. Ingle was a cabinetmaker who supplied Jefferson with both cabinetwork and tools, such as plane blades, sandpaper, chisels and screws. Jefferson’s memorandum books record this check as payment in full for cabinetwork. This example is just the third Jefferson check RR Auction has ever offered. It is estimated at $8,000-$10,000.
