AVON, Conn. – Trinity International Auctions & Appraisals specializes in fine American and European paintings, prints and sculpture, and has built a solid track record across many genres, including Russian art. An outstanding selection of works by Russian painters will be front and center in Trinity’s 2nd Annual Summer Auction, slated for Thursday, July 30. Internet live bidding will be available on all 201 lots in this sale through LiveAuctioneers.com.

“We are excited by the quality of works we have been able to bring to this auction, particularly Russian, American and European art,” said Trinity’s president and owner, Stephen Gass. “Our offerings of Russian pieces are particularly strong.”

Among the highlights Gass selected for special attention are a rare double-sided painting (lot 60) by Abraham Manievich (Russian/American, 1881-1942), and a stunning portrait titled Mother and Child (lot 47) by Boris Grigoriev (Russian, 1886-1929).

Several paintings by David Davidovich Burliuk (Russian/American, 1882-1967) will be auctioned, including Feeding the Ducks (lot 6).

Additionally, the sale’s top lots include pictures by Alexandre Altmann (Russian, 1885-1950) (lots 27 and 28), and a pair of paintings by Vasily Sitnikov (Russian, 1915-1987) (lots 6A and 6B) coming from the collection of Alexandr Gleser. This is particularly important provenance, as Russian art aficionados would know. Gleser is the renowned art critic and collector of post-Soviet art who defied Russian authority with his 1974 outdoor exhibition of modern paintings in Moscow. After fleeing to Austria, where he lived in exile, Gleser came to the United States. He is now director the Museum of Contemporary Russian Art in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Among the sculptures cataloged in the July 30 sale are bronzes created by Paul (Paolo) Prince Troubetzkoy (Russian/American, 1866-1938) (lot 43); Peter Karlovitch Klodt (Russian, 1805-1867) (lot 146); and Evgeny Alexandrovich Lancery (Russian, 1848-1886) (lot 145). A multi-stone and silver sculpture by Vasiliy Konovalenko (Russian, 1929-1989) (lot 48) depicts a fully outfitted Cossack.

Important European works include a wonderful still life by Joseph Correggio (German, 1810-1891) (lot 19); port scenes by A.N. Burlins (French, d. 1878) (lot 7); and Luigi Moretti (Italian, 1884-1950) (lot 86).

Other pieces include an aquatint by Georges Rouault (French, 1871-1958) (lot 26); Chateau in a Summer Landscape by Louis Bourgeois-Borgex (French, b. 1873) (lot 8); and a charcoal and chalk titled Stormy Sea, attributed to J.M.W. Turner (British, 1775-1851) (lot 10).

American artists make a strong showing in this auction with a delightful orchard scene by Edward Henry Potthast (1857-1927) (lot 61); the seasonally appropriate Still Life with Peaches, Melon and Grapes by Levi Wells Prentice (1851-1935) (lot 96); and landscapes by Louis Aston Knight (1873-1948) (lot 55); and Autumn Landscape in Connecticut by Ernest F. Fiene (1894-1965) lot 100). Also included are works by Berthelsen, Louis Betts, Nan Greacen, N.A., and several modernist encaustics by Emil Bisttram.

American sculptures include several by Albert Wein (1915-1991) (lots 192-198) and (attrib. to) Harriet Whitney Frishmuth (1880-1980).

In addition to the well-known American artists represented in this auction, Trinity is taking the opportunity in this sale to showcase the works of contemporary sculptor Avis Turner. A prominent artist of the modern figurative sculpture revival, Turner is the recipient of the prestigious National Sculpture Award/Scholarship, has studied in Paris, Greece and Italy, and has shown internationally as well as in the United States. In presenting Turner’s Kneeling Caryatid (lot 63) and Small Meadow Gatherer (lot 62), Trinity continues to show its support of exceptional artists, particularly those working in the New England area.
