NEW YORK – Jesus Christ and many of the saints and angels are represented in an online auction of Russian icons that will be conducted by Jasper52 on Wednesday, May 6. The expected top lot is a double-sided wooden icon depicted both the Resurrection and the Madonna and Christ Child from the 16th century. The double-sided icon (above) features the Virgin Hodegetria, an iconographic depiction of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) holding the Child Jesus at her side while pointing to him as the source of salvation for humankind. It measures approximately 11¼ by 14¾ inches and has an estimate of $11,000-$13,000.
A rare Russian icon of St. Nikolas (below) was painted in the mid-19th century using egg tempera with gold leaf on wood. The icon is protected by silver riza that bears indistinct hallmarks. This Icon is from St. Petersburg, Russia and has a $7,000-$8,000 estimate.
St. Michael the Archangel astride a winged horse is the subject of a larger 19th-century Russian icon that carries a $1,200-$1,500 estimate.
Another large 19th century icon is titled Our Lady of the Inexhaustible Chalice and is an example of a Vetka icon, named for the town in Belarus where it was created (est. $4,000-$5,000).
