Santa Monica Auctions May 6-7 event includes fundraiser for AIDS charity

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – On Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7, Santa Monica Auctions will present a series of sales. The May 6 event will consist of two presentations: a photography sale, starting at 1 pm Pacific time, followed by a charity auction supporting the non-profit Focus On AIDS (FOA). The May 7 session will feature modern and contemporary art. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The photography auction on May 6 will feature more than 100 works by some of the most renowned photographers of our time, curated by Douglas Marshall of Marshall Gallery, Bergamot Station Arts Center, A6. Some of the artists represented in the auction lineup will include Andy Warhol, Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lola Alvarez Bravo, William Eggleston, Elliot Erwitt, David Fokos, Robert Heinecken, Christopher Makos, Marvin Newman, Alex Prager, William Claxton and Brett and Edward Weston.

After the first photography sale of the day, Santa Monica Auctions will conduct a special benefit auction of 28 photographs in support of the Focus On AIDS Foundation, a charity founded in 1987 by Susan Baraz, Hossein Farmani and Robert Berman.

FOA has decided to auction some of the remaining major works from its archive through Santa Monica Auctions, with 100% of the hammer proceeds donated. The group of 28 will include photographs by Berenice Abbott, Lillian Bassman, George Hurrell, Allen Ginsburg and Elliott Erwitt as well as the Taschen book GOAT – Greatest of All Time: A Tribute to Muhammad Ali. Everything will be offered without reserve.

FOA is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit charity that has held more than 15 auctions during the last 30 years. It has raised and donated millions of dollars for AIDS research, to AIDS charities in the U.S., to orphanages in Africa and Cambodia, and also built a Children’s AIDS Hospital named Asha Kirana (Ray of Hope) in Mysore, India that is the sole stand-alone AIDS hospital in the world.

Following the two sales on May 6, Santa Monica Auctions will hold a modern and contemporary art auction featuring more than 100 works by artists including Shepard Fairey, Andy Warhol, Mary Corse, Keith Haring, Carlos Almaraz, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hockney, GRONK, Sam Francis, Eric Orr, Robbie Conal, Billy Al Bengston, Alex Katz, Ed Moses, Jenny Holzer, Christo, John Baldessari, Sterling Ruby, Man Ray, Joan Miro, Chagall, Robert Indiana, Ed Ruscha and Tom Wesselmann.
