SARASOTA Fla. – Sarasota Estate Auction will conduct what is expected to be among the largest auctions of fine art and antiques ever in Sarasota with 1,400 lots over two days on Nov. 14-15. The sale will feature works by American artists Jane Peterson, Hayley Lever, Theresa Ferber Bernstein, Hudson River School artist James McDougal Hart and more from European artists. A dozen Russian and German paintings will be headlining the two-day sale. Ivan Aivazovsky, noted for his marine scenes from the 19th century, has had recent sales consistently reaching six figures and some selling for more than a million dollars. This sale will feature one of his works, another marine scene showing a sailing ship in a stormy sea (above). More Russian pieces include a postwar Kiev street scene approximately 6 feet 6 inches by 4 feet, circa 1945-50, showing a politically ideal view of Soviet life with mothers and children in a park-like setting.
Most of the auction’s lots are from area collections in the Sarasota area. The family of the late Stanley and Janet Kane have commissioned Andrew Ford of Sarasota Estate Auction to liquidate some of their collections at this sale. There will be four life-size sculptures by noted Sarasota artist Jack Dowd, including Andy Warhol and classical pianist Arthur Rubenstein. More than 300 lots from the Kane collection will be offered.
“This sale contains more work by American women then have been available at any other sale,” said Hart. The offerings include five oils by Jane Peterson an American Impressionist and Expressionist painter from her homes in Massachusetts and New York. Six oils by Theresa Ferber Bernstein (1890-2002) who emigrated to New York as a child are in the sale. Her work, done in New York City and Gloucester, Mass., has been sought after since her passing. Still life oils by Marguerite Pearson (1898-1978) are in this sale as well.
Australian-born Hayley Lever (1876-1958) spent his early life in Europe and studied art there before arriving in New York in 1912. He painted views of his newly found home in New York and New England.
Best known for his murals, Thomas Gilbert White (1877-1939) was an American painter, who also did many exhibition sized works, with three in this sale.
The auction will include a coffee table from the shop of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, the father and son who worked together in New York City to create exceptional furniture that doubled as art.
Jewelry highlights in this sale feature a diamond cluster bracelet with over 14 carats of diamonds set in platinum; two solitaire diamond rings, each with European cut stones of more than three carats; several exceptional watches; and a garnet choker.
More variety at the sale includes a bone cane that is attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte; collections of silver holloware and flatware as well as furniture of the 18th and 19th centuries some of which came from the Stanley Kane estate.
