Sets of literary classics star in Jasper52 auction Sept. 24

NEW YORK – A Jasper52 antiquarian book auction on Tuesday, Sept. 24, includes many sets of literary classics in fine bindings. With treasures in every price range, this sale offers collectors the opportunity to add rare volumes to their collections. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.  

A set of Jane Austen’s novels (above) was published by Chatto and Windus in London in 1917. The 10 volumes offered in the auction are bound in three-quarter green Morocco by Asprey’s with all edges gilt, raised bands and gilt panels. The set is in very good condition and has a $2,500-$3,000 estimate.

The novels of the Brontè sisters are contained in a 12-volume set published in Edinburgh, Scotland, by John Grant in 1905 (below). This Thornton Edition was edited by Temple Scott. Titles include Wuthering Heights, Villette, Shirley, The Professor, Agnes Grey, The Tenant of Windfell Hall and Jane Eyre. The books are bound in three-quarter red morocco (est. $2,000-$2,500).

Ralph Waldo Emerson’s complete works are contained in 11 volumes published by Riverside Press in 1883. The Riverside Edition offered in the auction is numbered 286 of only 500 printed. The books are leather-bound in full green Morocco. Their spines have faded to an even tan color (est. $2,000-$2,500).

G.P. Putnam’s Sons’ 40-volume “Holly Edition” of Washington Irving’s works was published in 1897. Bound in three-quarter green Morocco, titles include Oliver Goldsmith, Knickerbockers History of New York, Columbus, Life of George Washington, Astoria, Salmagundi, Tales of a Traveller and Spanish Papers. Portraits and other illustrations are included throughout the set (est. $2,000-$2,500).
