NEW YORK – To welcome the spring auction season, on March 12 Shapiro Auctions will hold its sale of important fine and decorative art and antiques, icons and Asian art with works from the 13th century to the present. With more than 450 lots, the sale will feature works by European, American, Russian, Asian and Latin American artists.
Among the American works presented at auction will be a quiet landscape created by a leading member of the Hudson River School, Sanford Robinson Gifford.
The painting (above) was gifted by the artist to the son of Archibald McIntyre, the co-founder of the Adirondack Iron and Steel Co. The sale will likewise feature a selection of works by America’s leading 19th and 20th century artists, including Leon Kroll, Albert Herter, Jules Eugene Pages, Reginald Marsh, Emma Fordyce Macrae and Max Weber among others.
Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse’s luscious sculpture of Angelique Chained to a Rock (below), a stunning example of the French sculptor’s terra-cotta work, will be among the works presented by European artists at the auction.
Likewise, included in the sale will be a nautical masterpiece by the German painter Theodore Weber depicting the Good Luck, a ship bearing the burgee of the New York Yacht Club on its middle mast.
Taking place in the heart of New York’s Asia Week, the sale at Shapiro Auctions will also prominently showcase a large selection of Chinese works of art, including an impressive collection of blanc de chine and a selection of jade carvings.
A large portion of the auction will also be devoted to Russian Orthodox icons. The sale will feature more than 70 icons, with some magnificent examples dating back to the 17th century.
