NEW YORK – On March 7, Auctions at Showplace will present 280 lots of estate fresh merchandise from New York City Metropolitan area estates including choice examples of 20th century art and design. Of note is Robert Indiana’s The American Dream complete portfolio, two Romare Bearden prints, and a 1989 César Baldaccini for Baccarat crystal sculpture of a thumb. Also featured are furniture by Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi, Eero Saarinen, Florence Knoll, and other sought-after designers. Fine art highlights begin with a complete portfolio of Robert Indiana’s “The American Dream” a 1997 edition of 395. The suite includes six loose silkscreens with the remaining 24 bound (as issued) along with introductory text and poems by Robert Creeley.

Featured items continue with a 1970 color screenprint with collage by Romare Bearden titled Carolina Blue from an edition of 100. It is followed by a 1979 color screenprint by Romare Beaden titled Odysseus Leaves Nausicaa from the Odysseus Suite. Also featured is a pastel drawing of a seated woman by Andre Derain and a 1980 signed lithograph titled Man in Harness by Alice Neel from an edition of 100. Also highlighted is a large folk art painted wood panel by Purvis Young depicting four heads. Fine art selections continue with a maritime oil painting of a clipper ship amid icebergs by Brian Coole with a Caropreso Gallery label on verso. The sale also includes three lots of floral prints by Donald Baechler. Sculpture highlights include a modern abstract bronze by Seymour Meyer titled La Tete. Fine art highlights conclude with a 1983 limited edition signed poster from Andy Warhol’s exhibition at Galerie Jurka in Amsterdam.

The sale also features a collection of Indian and Southeast Asian antiquities. The collection opens with an Indian red sandstone figural sculpture of Vishnu from the 11th or 12th century. The work, which has provenance from Sotheby’s London, was exhibited at the Amarillo Art Center and removed from a private residence at the Pierre Hotel.

Next is a carved schist fragment of a lion, circa third century from the Gandhara region, adorned with a long finely combed mane above rounded features. The wide eyes are above an open mouth revealing a dangling tongue, probably originally a throne support. It is followed by a Khmer carved stone head of Vishnu from the Angkor period, circa 10th–12th century. The piece is mounted on a rectangular stepped stone base. Next is a Khmer carved sandstone sculpture of a deity, likely Vishnu, circa 11th– 12th century, mounted to a base also from the private residence at the Pierre Hotel. The collection closes with a carved schist head of a bodhisattva, possibly Prince Siddharta.

Also featured is a mid-century Fulvio Bianconi for Venini Pezzato patchwork glass vase and a modern Venini modern art glass ombre dark green ground vase.

Next is a 1991 Lawrence Weiner modern sculptural vase in stainless steel, copper and wood titled & Onwards, followed by a pair of Franz Hagenauer-attributed Austrian Art Deco sculptural umbrella stands, depicting corresponding male and female busts in profile, worked in mixed metal. Decorative arts highlights conclude with a rare Nantucket “double lollipop” woven basket with swing handle and a J.L. Coquet Limoges porcelain partial dinner service in the Hemisphere Toundra Automne pattern.

Showplace will present a collection of Arts & Crafts furniture and a grouping of midcentury modern design on March 7. Stickley lots include an oak sideboard with copper hardware, a Stickley oak bookcase, a Stickley oak armchair with a horizontal slat back, a set of six Stickley oak and black leather dining chairs, and a Stickley oak bench with wide plank slats around a green upholstered seat with black leather cushions. Midcentury modern offerings open with a  Vladimir Kagan, model 6500, parcel ebonized lacquered cherry wood platform bed with integrated nightstands. The bed is followed by a Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller contemporary midcentury lounge chair and ottoman (model numbers 670 and 671) with maker’s label underside. Next is an Angelo Lelli for Arredoluce Italian Triennale floor lamp with three articulated arms and white enameled conical shades. Modern design highlights conclude with an Eero Saarinen for Knoll “Tulip” dining table in white enameled metal and round white marble top bearing maker’s label.

Silver seekers will find a Judaica sterling silver tiered Torah crown with pierced and repousse decoration featuring Stars of David motif framing open work words “Keter Torah. The piece weighs 98.6 ounces inclusive and was removed from a Monsey, N.Y., estate. It is followed by an early 18th century Judaica pewter Passover seder plate, likely German with engraved decoration, including a central motif of flowers overflowing from a vase surmounted by a coat of arms with a shield bearing an anchor and date “1726.”

Also of note is a Wisner 4-by-5 technical field camera with three Calumet lenses and a rare Chanel black interlock jersey double flap handbag, circa 1984, from the estate of designer and model Nina Griscom.
