HOUSTON – Artwork ranging from a 17th-century landscape by a well-known Dutch painter to an abstract by a highly regarded Latin-American artist will be featured at Simpson Galleries’ auction Sept. 13. Many of the 381 lots are from the estate of Harry K. Smith of Houston. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding. The auction will begin at 1 p.m. Central Time.
Carnival of the Animals, an abstract painting by Carlos Merida (Guatemalan, 1895-1984), is estimated at $20,000-$30,000. The oil-on-cloth painting executed in 1958 measures 15 by 22 inches.
Born in Guatemala City in 1895, Merida moved to Mexico as a young artist and became active in the Mexican mural painting school. He died in 1984.
Dutch artist Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668) worked much of this life in his home city of Haarlem in north Holland. The painting titled A Lakeside Gathering near a Tent with Horses is typical of his work. The oil painting on a 13- by 15-inch panel has a $20,000-$30,000 estimate.
Estimated at $25,000-$35,000 is a large Paris street scene, Place de la Bastille, by Edouard Leon Cortes (French, 1882-1969).
A rare set of six Newcomb College art pottery plates decorated by Marie De Hoa LeBlanc around 1905 is a much-anticipated lot. The 8-inch plates, each decorated with an incised and stylized flower head rim, bear the artist’s pottery mark and the registration mark “AK59.” LeBlanc was active at Newcomb from 1898-1914. The set has a $20,000-$30,000 estimate.
A finely painted porcelain plaque, possibly KPM, of two maidens fishing in a garden pond, has a $1,000-$1,500. It measures 7 3/4 inches high by 5 3/4 inches wide and is signed “Jäger.”
