BUFORD, Ga. – Slotin Auction, whichg specializes in self-taught art, is also the premier auction house for bringing the strange, the unusual and the vanishing America to the block. Slotin’s April 28-29 sale is sure to pique the interest of any collector looking for exceptional examples by important artists as well as fantastic new discoveries. Slotin’s two-day Spring Masterpiece Sale features 1,147 lots of the best in self-taught, outsider and folk art, Southern folk pottery, circus and carnival items, international folk art, trade signs, Native American art, erotica, canes, flash art, antique and anonymous furniture, African American decorative arts, Thomas Day furniture, santos, highwaymen, decoys and new discoveries.

Southern Folk Pottery will open the sale each day with over 100 strong examples. Bidders will find 14 iconic face jugs by Lanier Meaders, lots 28-41, as well as wonderful examples by Arie and Cheever Meaders, Edwin “Nub” Meaders, B.B. Craig and Billy Ray Hussey.

The Masterpiece section kicks off right after the pottery with a strong lineup of the who’s who of self-taught art. Lots 143-153 will feature some of the best works by Purvis Young to ever hit the auction block, including his masterpiece, Lot 143 Black and White Horses (above), paint on found board, 96 inches wide by 48 inches high (est. $5,000-$8,000).

Watch for an important work by Bill Traylor, Black Turkey, circa 1939-42 (est. $30,000-$40,000).

An extensively exhibited work by Ellis Ruley titled Stag Hunt, circa 1950s-’60s, carries a  $15,000-$20,000 estimate.

A prime example by Sam Doyle, paint on tin, purchased directly from the artist, Lot 122, Penn Drummer Boy  (below) is sure to get collectors buzzing (est. $15,000-$20,000). The 1963 Untitled, #208 work by Minnie Evans, Lot 160, crayon and ink on paper is absolutely stunning (est. $6,000-$8,000). Other highlights include, lot 129, Sister Gertrude Morgan, I Saw Four Angels (est. $7,000-$10,000), and two important soot and spit drawings by James Castle, Lots 136 & 137 (est. $3,000-$5,000 each).

Keep an eye out for some unusual gems as well, including Lot 111 a beautiful Americana portrait of Lady Liberty by Georgia artist Ruby Malone circa 1930s-’40s oil on canvas, 45 inches wide by w x 54 inches high (est. $1,000-$3,000), Lot 187, a large and impressive hand-painted resin sculpture by Sergio Bustamante, Rhino En Bicicleta (below), 60 inches high by 42 inches by 22 inches (est. $1,000-$2,000), and Lot 794, an oil on Masonite work by Eric Sloane titled, Lovejoy Bridge, S. Andover Maine.
